The Princeton Nursery was founded in Kingston New Jersey by William Flemer Sr. in 1913. After years of searching for a new site to grow his business, Flemer chose Kingston for its nutrient rich soil and location which was halfway between New York and Philadelphia. Flemer continued to buy land and property to provide housing for his many employees. At its peak the nursery grew to 1200 acres and was the largest commercial nursery in the United States. Through the Great Depression the nursery survived by growing farm crops and using German prisoners of war for labor. William Flemer III, specialized in breeding and introduced many new varieties of shade and ornamental trees. The nursery was granted dozens of patents including Green Mountain Sugar Maple. The nursery closed in 2010 but more than 240 acres of the nursery have been preserved along with 25 historic structures. Here you can still find many of the beautiful trees introduced and planted by the Flemer family.

How To Plant USDA Organic Green Mountain® Sugar Maple

Sugar Maples = awesome fall color and maple syrup to boot! They are easy to grow and you can plant them in practically any sunny location, just make sure the soil is not too wet or too dry. Sugar Maples grow at a rate that is “just right” – not like the fast-growing Red Maples or the slow-growing Norway Maples. Sugar Maples will brighten your cool, autumn days and autumn is the best time to pay it back by fertilizing. Supply it with a dose of medium rate fertilizer for the first few years. This will help your tree produce healthy new growth for the upcoming spring season. Just like the Red and Norway Maples, Sugar Maples have no major pest or disease problems. One thing that is different, however, is that Sugar Maples don’t have the usual problem with surface roots, giving you more space to plant lots and lots of shade-loving plants!

How To Water

Sugar Maples will appreciate regular water during its first few years in the ground and irrigation during long dry spells after it’s established.

How To Fertilize

Sugar Maples will brighten your cool, autumn days and autumn is the best time to pay it back by fertilizing. Incorporate Elements Starter Plant food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.
