Why plant Audubon® Carolina Silverbell?
When the world begins to green up, lilacs are blooming, and robins are laying their eggs, Carolina Silverbell adds its own flourish to the spring festivities. Look up then and enjoy this underused native tree's pearly white blossoms, which are suspended from every branch like little parasols.
Silverbell is native to much of the Southeastern U.S. and was known to English colonists before the U.S. was the U.S. So, it’s not surprising that the tree was named by an Englishman for another Englishman. London merchant John Ellis suggested the name Halesia for his friend Stephen Hales. Hales was a clergyman, botanist, biologist, philosopher, chemist, and physiologist. Some of his most important work was done designing ventilators for dank, unhealthy places like ships. Keep in mind this was in the early 1700s—oxygen had not been “discovered” yet!
How to use Audubon® Carolina Silverbell in the landscape?
"Be there with bells on" is this tree's theme! Each spring, this spectacular tree will "chime in" with clusters of white, bell-shaped flowers that line the branches. Wonderful yellow foliage will delight you in the fall. A very giving tree that can easily be introduced to your landscape design. A cozy sitting area under its branches will become a magical space in your landscape each spring, and in summer its dappled shade will make the seat below it a favorite place to sip a cold lemonade and unwind. Plant this medium-sized ornamental tree against a background of large evergreens like Norway Spruce or Hemlock to help the dainty white flowers achieve maximum impact.
Audubon® Native Plants & Trees
Audubon is devoted to protecting birds and the places they need, while Bower & Branch is devoted to the growth of true native trees and plants–no cultivars or hybrids. Together, we strive to unite communities in conservation and inspire individuals to cultivate a better world for birds starting in their own backyards, balconies, or patios. By guiding and recommending trees and plants truly native and beneficial to your region, we can really start to make a difference.
What is the definition of Native?
“In the United States, a native plant is defined as one that was naturally found in a particular area before European colonization. Native plants are the foundation of a region’s biodiversity, providing essential food sources and shelter for birds, especially those threatened by the changing climate. Since native plants are adapted to local precipitation and soil conditions, they generally require less upkeep, therefore helping the environment and saving you time, water, and money.” – The National Audubon Society

How To Plant Audubon® Carolina Silverbell
Carolina Silverbell is a beautiful tree and one that should be planted more often. For starters, it has awesome exfoliating bark that supplies you with visual interest throughout the year. The clusters of white bell-shaped flowers aren’t too shabby either. The low-branching habit makes the Carolina Silverbell a great candidate for a lawn or specimen tree in your garden. Considered a small tree, this beauty will make an excellent addition if planted by your deck or patio. They like sunny locations and do well in your everyday well-drained soil. Another bonus, Carolina Silverbells don’t have any major pest problems.
How To Water
Carolina Silverbells will appreciate regular water during its first few years in the ground and irrigation during long dry spells after it’s established.
How To Fertilize
Incorporate Elements Starter Plant food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.
How To Prune
Carolina Silverbells are fast growers, so prune in late spring (after they flower!) when needed to keep it in tip-top shape.

How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health.. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
