It thrives in wet or periodically flooded areas but adapts surprisingly well to average garden soils. Add mulch to conserve moisture and create a clean base around the trunk. Pruning is rarely necessary aside from removing lower branches if you desire more clearance. If planted near water, the tree may form its famous cypress knees, adding sculptural interest to the scene.
