Why plant Shishigashira Camellia?

Decadent and showy, the Shishigashira Camellia takes its role in the landscape seriously. Semi-double blooms full of hot pink petals will flood the evergreen leaves with early to mid season fall color. Shishigashira is the ultimate all-in-one camellia when it comes to how to use it best in the landscape. The growing branches of Shishigashira can be trained to create a whimsical hedge, espaliers, or bring it to the patio in your favorite landscape container. Shishigashira isn't just a pretty face, this stunning camellia will also grace your landscape and your senses with a soft perfume that can be enjoyed by all!

Camellia hiemalis is a natural hybrid between the spring blooming c. Japonica and the autumn blooming c. Sasanqua. Shishigashira Camellia is a variety of the resulting hybrid. It was developed in Ikedo City, Japan in the late 1800's. Shishigashira Camellia is one of the loveliest and most prolific bloomers of the fall season, with semi-double, vibrant pink flowers. It is a splendid addition to your fall garden when in full bloom!

How to use Shishigashira Camellia in the landscape?

Shishigashira Camellias are a small, compact shrub with a slow growth habit, making it an excellent choice for smaller gardens, containers, and landscapes with limited space. It has beautiful, semi-double, dark pink flowers that bloom from October to January. Its evergreen leaves are glossy dark green, creating a pleasing backdrop for the colorful blooms.

Planting Zones

Hardiness Zone: 7-10

How To Plant Shishigashira Camellia

Camellias like a well drained slightly acidic soil with lots of organic material. Combine that with a location that gets some sun but not sun all day and you are on the way to success with your Camellia. Full morning sun or dappled afternoon sun are ideal. Remember to plant it where it is not in competition with tree roots. Mulch it but only with 1 to 2" of mulch. In the northern portion of Camellia growing territory (zones 6 and 7) it is best to plant in the spring or early fall so your Camellia has time to establish before dealing with winter weather.

How To Water

Water twice weekly for the first 3-5 weeks; then water weekly for the remainder of the year until winter. When you water, water slowly and thoroughly. Watering needs may be altered due to extreme weather conditions.

How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant Food granular form on an annual basis each fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.

How To Prune

Prune your fall/early winter flowering Camellia in early spring, before the new growth begins.
