      Why plant Brown Turkey Fig?

Delicious fruit with bronze skin and amber flesh arise all over this cold-tolerant tree! Fruits on new wood, so even after a severe winter, the new branches will bear big loads of delectable fruit.

Native to the Middle East, western Asia, and southern Europe, Fig Trees have a long history in western civilization. According to archaeological remains found in the Middle East, figs were most likely our first agricultural crop, farmed even before wheat and barley. Brown Turkey Fig is the eastern variant, it bears early and late crops. Brown Turkey originated in France and was one of the fig varieties grown by Thomas Jefferson at Monticello.

How to use Brown Turkey Fig in the landscape?

What a fantastic fig! Brown Turkey is the fig that you’ll want to have growing in your landscape; with it growing two crops a year, you’ll have figs for you and your friends. The first crop, the smaller crop, ripens in early spring, while the second, heartier main crop comes to fruition with fruits of larger quality and richer flavor. Fig trees also hold great ornamental value in the landscape with their attractive, lobed leaves and silver-gray bark.

How To Plant Brown Turkey Fig

Brown Turkey enjoys being located in a location with rich soil in organic matter, well-draining, and of a moist quality. This fig enjoys soaking up warm rays, so an area with plenty of full sun or even partial shade would be ideal for this tree. A winter-hardy fig, Brown Turkey is the tree you’ll want to be growing if hard winters are what you see yearly. To properly winter Brown Turkey, be sure to place it in a protected location where mulch can be laid to insulate the roots.

      How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.
