Why plant Raspberry Shortcake® Red Raspberry?

Dessert time! Your new love affair with raspberries begins with Bushel and Berry® Raspberry Shortcake® Raspberries! This deliciously tart treat will be the joy of summertime in your garden and in your belly! Welcoming spring with a cluster of white blooms giving way to full-size berries, cascading down as this self-pollinating shrub charms your heart! Thriving in patio pots or throughout your landscape, walk out to your back deck and have a handful for breakfast or bake up a heavenly shortcake dessert!

Originating from New Zealand, Raspberry Shortcake has an extensive history. A variety of Rubus idaeus, a European red raspberry, Raspberry Shortcake, has roots in Europe. In 1999, two plant breeders from New Zealand Institute for Plant & Food Research, Harvey Hall and Joseph Stephens, can be credited for creating this tasteful red raspberry. They carried out many controlled breedings and sent the resulting seeds to Washington, where raspberry growing was very popular. Out of the seedlings in Washington, one was found to be unique and credited with the name ‘NR7’. This plant was patented in 2011 under the name that we know as Raspberry Shortcake.

How to use Raspberry Shortcake® Red Raspberry in the landscape?

Grow fruit from the comfort of your patio! Raspberry Shortcake is a compact, thornless raspberry perfect for growing in your favorite patio container or raised garden bed. Its compact size allows it to be grown in the smallest of landscapes, allowing for the benefits of growing fruit without the need for large spaces. Enjoy the "fruits" of your labor with this mid-season producer. The sweet, vanilla flavor of these berries will prove refreshing on those hot summer days!

Planting Zones

Hardiness Zone: 4-9

How To Plant Raspberry Shortcake® Red Raspberry

Raspberry Shortcake enjoys having a sunny spot where it can collect the sun's rays freely with no shade. Raspberries enjoy being planted in acidic soil, rich in organic matter, moist, and well-draining. Be sure not to plant raspberries in areas with wet, soggy soil; these berries do not enjoy having wet feet. If the landscape has clay soil, planting raspberries in raised beds would be a great option to enjoy growing your fruit.

How To Water

Water twice weekly for the first 3-5 weeks; then water weekly for the remainder of the year until winter. When you water, water very slowly and very thoroughly. The water needs to reach to the bottom of the root ball and that takes time. Watering needs may be altered due to extreme weather conditions.

How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant Food granular form on an annual basis each fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.

How To Prune

After fruiting, prune all canes that produced fruit. Thoroughly prune late winter to early spring to remove any damage occurring during dormancy.
