Why plant Japanese Privet?

Looking to add depth to your garden or to the property value? Consider adding a privacy hedge because we've got the perfect plant for you! Known as the Japanese Privet, this evergreen shrub prompts a dense and fast growing habit - two ideal attributes for a hedge. Offering a visual display of glossy, oval-like, dark green foliage from above that is distinctively more pale underneath. From late spring to early summer, the Japanese Privet does produce small cream colored flowers that may attract butterflies. Once the blooms of the year have faded, this shrub produces small green berries that turn a lovely purple in late fall and last through the winter months - as long as birds leave them alone!

How to use Japanese Privet in the landscape?

While having no qualms when considering soil types, the Japanese Privet easily makes itself right at home wherever planted. With the added tolerance to drought and easy maintenance requirements, this shrub can be planted anywhere you desire! Most notably used as a border or hedge, the Japanese Privet has the added ability to be trained into any topiary shape! This shrub may also be used in containers and planter boxes, giving way to a plethora of new landscape ideas!

How To Plant Japanese Privet

Japanese Privet makes itself right at home in a location that has either full sun or part shade. When it comes to soil, Japanese Privet isn't too particular in that department! The only concern is to be sure it is well draining - nobody likes 'wet feet'!

How To Water

Watering your Japanese Privet when first planted should be done weekly to ensure proper growth. Once established, water as needed - at least once every ten days. Also pay attention to your local weather and water as needed in dryer hotter weather.

How To Fertilize

The Japanese Privet enjoys feeding at least once a year, either early spring before the push of new growth or in fall before the first frost of the season. Here at Bower & Branch, we offer our Elements Starter Plant Food to make all your fertilizing needs a breeze!

How To Prune

When working with the Japanese Privet, it is recommended to prune during the spring season, preferably after the blooms of the year. The Japanese Privet may be left in its shrub form and pruned to maintain shape, as well as remove any dead or damaged branches. This shrub may also be pruned and shaped into a tree form. To achieve this design, start by removing the lower branches to expose the trunk and shape the head according to your preference of design!
