Why plant Sulphur Flower?

The Sulphur Flower is a stunning addition to many gardens across the United States. Native to California and other Southwestern locations of North America, this shrub can be either evergreen or semi evergreen depending on the location. Growing up to a foot tall and about 3’ wide, the Sulphur Flower produces lovely foliage that's tinted green above with a soft white underbelly. Producing bright yellow blooms from red-tinted bulbs in early summer that last into the fall, we can see why the common name became Sulphur. When the blooms come to an end, we are delighted with a show as the blooms turn a reddish color that may be dried and utilized for decoration. These shrubs do provide seeds that are loved by birds in fall and, how could we forget, the attraction this shrub has to butterflies, bees and other pollinators!

How to use Sulphur Flower in the landscape?

Adding color, inviting friends, and providing interest are some of the best qualities of the Sulphur Flower. Bright yellow blooms will liven up any rock gardens, or banks where color seems void. The blooms of the Sulphur Flower bring pollinators galore to any landscape this shrub finds itself planted in. We also can't forget to mention the production of seeds that bring forth all kinds of birds to feast till their heart's content! This shrub also offers some protection for smaller wildlife who are looking for a place to rest. Try planting your Sulphur Flower in themed gardens such as cottage or Mediterranean, or utilize it as a ground cover around your property. You won't want to miss this vibrant blooming display!

Planting Zones

Hardiness Zone: 4-8

How To Plant Sulphur Flower

The Sulphur Flower is relatively easy to grow with only a few requirements. Living its best life when planted in areas that provide full sun, the Sulphur Flower is capable of living in areas that provide bright shade. Native to arid locations, the Sulphur Flower likes dry to medium soils that are well draining. They are also tolerant of the pH of the soils, they are accepting of acidic, alkaline, and neutral types as well.

How To Water

Watering your Sulphur Flower is fairly simple! Providing wonderful drought tolerance once established, we recommend watering your Sulfur Flower at least once a week or as needed until established. Following the establishment of your shrub, keep an eye on your Sulphur Flower and water when necessary, you may start to notice a lack of luster in color or the foliage begins to wither; this will be a tell-tale sign that your plant is thirsty.

How To Fertilize

After planting your Sulphur Flower, it will soon be time to feed your plants. This is one way to promote excellent growth and the health of your plants. Achieve this by starting the process early. We recommend adding fertilizer to the planting site as you plant. If you are planting in spring, the next time you will want to feed your plant will be in fall before the start of winter. If planting in the fall, the following spring will be a good time to complete another feeding. Maintain this process for the life of your plant and it will continue to grow happy and healthy.

How To Prune

Pruning is fairly simple when considering the Sulphur Flower. Maintaining its compact form, we recommend pruning away any dead or broken branches to make way for new growth. You may also prune for aesthetic purposes to maintain a tighter shape. Otherwise, deadheading your shrub is all that is needed for healthy growth. Deadheading is the removal of old blooms once their time has come.
