Why plant Audubon® Native Bald Cypress Treeling?

In the wild, eagles and ospreys nest in the tops of old Bald Cypress trees. They consider the lofty branches an excellent place to raise their young. In your own yard, you may not have eagles visiting your Bald Cypress tree, but many songbirds will enjoy perching in its branches and surveying the landscape below. Their songs will greet you on spring mornings. When the cones ripen, birds may take a renewed interest in Baldcypress—this time for its seeds. Cardinals, finches, grosbeaks, jays, and woodpeckers are known to be fond of dining on them.

Shortly after Hurricane Katrina local fisherman found a site off the coast of Alabama in the Gulf of Mexico that was swarming with fish and suspected that there was something “big” underwater. Thinking it was a ship this remained a guarded secret to prevent scuba divers from taking valuable artifacts. Finally in 2012 after being sworn to secrecy Ben Raines was given the secret location from a friend who owned a bait shop. What Raines discovered was an ancient underwater Bald Cypress swamp in pristine condition that was most likely uncovered by hurricane Katrina in 2005. Raines described the experience like this, “Swimming around amidst these stumps and logs, you feel like you’re in this fairy world” After 50,000 years these trees were so well preserved that when cut into them you can still smell fresh Cypress sap. The forest has become an artificial reef, attracting a variety of marine life and for that reason this treasure has a time limit. Scientists estimate that they have about 2 years to study these trees before wood-burrowing marine animals destroy them.

How to use Audubon® Native Bald Cypress Treeling in the landscape?

Bald is Beautiful! Taxodium is one of a few conifers providing shade in summer and lets the sun shine through in the winter. This tree actually loses all of its needles in fall. Soft, fine textured, green needles drop off to showcase the outstanding reddish-brown bark in winter adding yet another unique feature to your winter garden. An impressive pyramidal shape forming a very stately tree for your landscape.

      Audubon® Native Plants & Trees

Audubon is devoted to protecting birds and the places they need, while Bower & Branch is devoted to the growth of true native trees and plants–no cultivars or hybrids. Together, we strive to unite communities in conservation and inspire individuals to cultivate a better world for birds starting in their own backyards, balconies, or patios. By guiding and recommending trees and plants truly native and beneficial to your region, we can really start to make a difference.

What is the definition of Native?

“In the United States, a native plant is defined as one that was naturally found in a particular area before European colonization. Native plants are the foundation of a region’s biodiversity, providing essential food sources and shelter for birds, especially those threatened by the changing climate. Since native plants are adapted to local precipitation and soil conditions, they generally require less upkeep, therefore helping the environment and saving you time, water, and money.” – The National Audubon Society

How To Plant Audubon® Native Bald Cypress Treeling

Believe it or not, this is the same Bald Cypress that grows in the swamps down South and forms “knees” that seem to rise from the water and surround the base of the tree. The Baldcypress will not form “knees” when grown up North and they don’t need swamp conditions to survive. They like full sun and actually tolerate a very wide range of soil conditions. The Baldcypress is a deciduous conifer, meaning that it loses its needles every winter exposing its reddish brown bark. It has no insect problems and requires relatively low maintenance, it’s a “plant it and forget it” type of tree.

      How To Water

Water twice weekly for the first 3-5 weeks; then water weekly for the remainder of the year until winter. When you water, water very slowly and very thoroughly. The water needs to reach to the bottom of the root ball and that takes time. Watering needs may be altered due to extreme weather conditions.

      How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant Food granular form on an annual basis each fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established as it gives your tree the nutrients it needs to produce lush new growth for the following spring.

      How To Prune

As your tree grows, remove a few of the lower branches each year if you do not want your tree to have lower limbs. Each year remove a few of the lower branches before they reach 1/2 inch in diameter. It is better to make small cuts to avoid cutting a large, more mature branch - this is too stressful for the tree. Each year, make any corrective pruning needed, paying particular attention to removing damaged branches, rubbing branches, multiple leaders at the top, or suckers at the base. Limit any pruning to no more than 25% of the branching structure in a given year. Pruning benefits the tree and helps to achieve a balanced tree form.

      How Does Shipping Work?

Size Small (AAA), Medium (A2A), and Large (AA) plants (our Treelings, Shrubs, Bushes, and Perennials) will be shipped directly to your home by a common carrier. Ships in a plant-safe designed box within 5-7 business days.

      How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health.. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
