Why the Audubon® Shadblow Serviceberry Treeling?

The moment that Canadian Serviceberry’s fruits are ripe, you’ll know it—songbirds will appear in your yard like magic, and they’ll get right to work picking your tree clean. They can’t resist those juicy, blue-black morsels! Mockingbirds, catbirds, robins, and Cedar Waxwings are the top consumers, but many, many species will take advantage of this delicious and nutritious food source. You may want to plant a whole grove of trees so that everyone can get their share. Everyone—that means you, too! The juicy berries are tasty to humans as well. Use them like blueberries in recipes, or just eat them fresh.

Serviceberry may not be a household word, but it should be! These delightful trees and shrubs are found in every state of the Union except for Hawaii. “Canadian” Serviceberry is a bit misleading in its name, because this plant’s native range extends all the way down to our southernmost states. Primarily a coastal species, it’s found from Newfoundland to Mississippi. In the wild, Canadian Serviceberry favors boggy areas, though it doesn’t require constantly wet soil in the landscape. Plants assume a V-shape and typically have several trunks.

How to use in the landscape?

Scrumptious fruit is not the only thing that Canadian Serviceberry has to offer. In early spring, sparkling white flowers attract pollinators; in autumn, foliage turns shades of gold and orange.

What is the definition of Native?

“In the United States, a native plant is defined as one that was naturally found in a particular area before European colonization. Native plants are the foundation of a region’s biodiversity, providing essential food sources and shelter for birds, especially those threatened by the changing climate. Since native plants are adapted to local precipitation and soil conditions, they generally require less upkeep, therefore helping the environment and saving you time, water, and money.” – The National Audubon Society

How To Plant

Fall color on the Canadian Serviceberry will be most intense in full sun, but the foliage quality will be best if the tree receives some shade during the hottest part of the day. The soil should be enriched with organic matter. A generous layer of wood chips or shredded bark mulch will help to hold in moisture and moderate temperatures in the root zone. Irrigate regularly and feed with Elements™ Fertilizer to get your tree off to a good start. Keep trimmers and other lawn equipment away from the trunk, as the bark of Canadian Serviceberry—like all Serviceberries—is thin and vulnerable to damage.

How To Water

Shadblow Serviceberry will appreciate regular water during its first few years in the ground and irrigation during long dry spells after it’s established.

How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.

How Does Shipping Work?

Size AA & AAA (our Treelings, Shrubs, Bushes, and Perennials) will be shipped directly to your home by a common carrier. Ships in a plant-safe designed box within 5-7 business days.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health.. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
