Why the Balaton™ Sweet Cherry Bare Root?
Balaton is a fun character that comes to us from Hungary as an alternative tart cherry to Montmorency. Similar but still different, Balaton offers a vigorously growing tree with an abundance of cherries for all to enjoy. The kiddos will having competitions over who can pick the most cherries, and most probably will not make it back into the house. At least you'll have peace of mind knowing that your family is eating fresh fruit from the saftey of your own backyard.
Balaton's history takes us back to Hungary when Hungarian farmers, in communist collectives, would collect the best tart cherry plantings in the town of Ujfeherto. These collected trees were determined to be the best tart cherries in Hungary, and cuttings from these trees made it all over the country as well as finally finding it's way to America. The fact that a tart cherry became popular in Hungary is unusual as Hungarians are more apt to enjoying sweet cherries but Balaton has changed the minds of many. Balaton is named after Lake Balaton found near Ujfeherto, Hungary.
How to use in the landscape?
A late-season producer, Balaton will not disappoint with its abundance of cherries on each branch. Being a vigorous tree, Balaton will not let just anything stop it from growing to it's full potential or filling it's branches with ripe cherries ripe for the picking. Balaton is partially self-fertile, however you will want to plant another sweet cherry nearby to produce larger yields than it would without another pollinator.

How To Plant
Cherries are fast-growing trees, but keeping them in prime condition can be a bit of a challenge, as they are subject to a fair number of pests and diseases that find Cherries as appealing as we do. Smart cultural practices will go a long way towards keeping your Balaton Sweet Cherry Tree healthy and productive. Plant it in an open, sunny site in soil that's fertile and well drained. Provide regular irrigation during establishment and in periods of drought and mulch around the tree annually with shredded bark or wood chips to maintain even moisture and to moderate temperatures in the root zone. Be on the lookout for any potential problems and remove and destroy diseased fruits, leaves, or branches. You will need another variety of Sweet Cherry Tree in the vicinity to pollinate with.

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
