Although bitter to eat fresh of the plant, Chokeberries are not just ornamental and attractive to birds; you can use these tart treats to make homemade jam and jellies as you can sweeten them up and enjoy on your morning bagel! The main attraction with Brilliant Red is the striking red of the foliage come fall - plant en masse to bring excitement to the landscape. Brilliant Red Chokeberry will also flower in the spring, as the dainty white blooms will pop against the dark green spring foliage.
Brilliant Red Chokeberry is a cultivar of the native Red Chokeberry that produces more lustrous foliage and larger, more abundant fruit. This cultivar is more compact than the species, but grows in all the same conditions as its parent.
How to use Brilliant Red Chokeberry in the landscape?
This shrub is most commonly used for the color it will add to your landscape through three seasons of the year. White flowers adorn the shrub in spring, attracting butterflies and bees. Abundant clusters of red berries follow in late summer and continue to cling to the branches through fall and winter, providing food for birds and wildlife. In fall, the glossy green leaves turn a vibrant red, often the brightest in the neighborhood!
