Why plant Jacqueline Hillier Holland Elm Treeling?
Not every landscape has the space for the gentle giant Elm tree (unfortunately!), but in those instances, we have the answer! Enter - the Jacqueline Hillier Dwarf Elm! This is a slow growing, dwarf Elm that sports a rounded growth habit, not unlike a shrub. Growing to similar heights and widths of about 8-12’, these trees are a petite, mini version of the classic Elm we all know and love! In spring, the leaves are similar to the larger Elms, but on the same miniature scale! They emerge as a deep green with serrated edges and by fall, they transition into lovely hues of orange. Interestingly enough, due to the slow growth habit and unique structure of the tree, this Elm bodes very well as a bonsai specimen! So small yards and bonsai growers - rejoice! We've got the tree you need right here!
The Jacqueline Hillier Holland Elm was first recognized in a private garden in Birmingham, England in the 1960s. The actual origin of the plant remains to be seen though, as the owner of the private garden stated that it may have been planted by a relative who brought it in from another country!
How to use Jacqueline Hillier Holland Elm Treeling in the landscape?
When considering the Jacqueline Hillier Holland Elm, there are a few unique attributes that should be taken into consideration. First, this tree is a hybrid that offers resistance to Dutch Elm Disease and a tolerance to urban pollution. Next, due to its slow growth habit and overall small stature, this unique variety can be planted in a plethora of locations! While maintaining its petite form, this tree is ideal as an intriguing specimen tree, an accent tree or even potted in a container! This darling, elegant elm can also be trained into a bonsai for those who are willing to take the time to train and work with the tree!
Hardiness Zone: 5-8
How To Plant Jacqueline Hillier Holland Elm Treeling
While the Jacqueline Hillier Holland Elm thrives in locations that are in full sun, they are tolerant of a light shade. When it comes to the soil preference, they fancy a moist and rich, well draining soil. With proper care, these unique trees can live upwards of 70 years or more!
How To Water
Like you and I, trees require water to survive. After planting your Jacqueline Hiller Holland Elm, we recommend watering at least twice a week until established. We advise keeping an eye on your local weather and water accordingly during periods of drought or other inclement weather to ensure the health of your tree.
How To Fertilize
When planting your Jacqueline Hillier Holland Elm, we recommend that you fertilize with the Bower & Branch Elements Starter Plant Food. This will ensure your tree is receiving a sufficient amount of nutrients, which it needs to get itself established! After that, you should fertilize in early spring to assist in the upcoming growing season, and again in fall before dormancy to ensure healthy growth for many years to come. Continue this process for the life of the tree and see how happy it will be.
How To Prune
The proper time to prune your Jacqueline Hillier Holland Elm would be during its dormancy period - so, late fall, winter, or early spring - before the push of new growth. You will want to remove any damaged or broken branches, and shape the tree as you see fit. Keep an eye on crossed branches and remove them accordingly as to not allow for damage to occur later on in the growth process.
How Does Shipping Work?
Size Small, Medium, and Large plants (our Treelings, Shrubs, Bushes, and Perennials) will be shipped directly to your home by a common carrier. Ships in a plant-safe designed box within 4-7 business days.
How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
