Why plant Blackgold® Sweet Cherry Bare Root?
Life is sweet with a Blackgold® Sweet Cherry Tree in your backyard. Instead of buying a few high-dollar supermarket cherries when cherry season comes around, you and your family will be able to indulge in a whole tree-full of these delicious morsels and snack to your hearts’ content. This is snacking you can feel good about, too. Cherries are low in calories, they’re a great source of vitamins A and C, and this dark red variety is especially rich in antioxidants, which are known anti-inflammatory and cancer-fighting agents. Not just a fruit tree, the Blackgold® Sweet Cherry is a superfruit tree!
The Blackgold® Cherry Tree (a.k.a. ‘Ridgewood Cherry’) traces its origins to the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva. In 1975, researchers there hybridized the Starks Gold Cherry with the Stella Sweet Cherry in hopes of producing a new tree with the best attributes of both parents. One feature they were looking for was late bloom time so that the blossoms would be more likely to avoid damaging frosts. Out of 433 seedlings, they found a tree that bloomed later than any other Sweet Cherry Tree on the market, and the new tree had many other fine qualities as well. Blackgold® Cherry was introduced by Cornell University in 2001.
How to use Blackgold® Sweet Cherry Bare Root in the landscape?
Blackgold® Cherry’s fragrant white flowers are self-pollinating, meaning that it will set fruit all by itself. It will also serve as a pollinator for other Sweet Cherry Trees you might have that aren’t self-fertile, as long as they bloom at the same time. With proper care, the flowers will result in a heavy crop of plump, juicy cherries every year.

How To Plant Blackgold® Sweet Cherry Bare Root
Cherries are fast-growing trees, but keeping them in prime condition can be a bit of a challenge, as they are subject to a fair number of pests and diseases that find Cherries as appealing as we do. Smart cultural practices will go a long way towards keeping your Blackgold® Cherry Tree healthy and productive. Plant it in an open, sunny site in soil that’s fertile and well drained.
Provide regular irrigation during establishment and in periods of drought and mulch around the tree annually with shredded bark or wood chips to maintain even moisture and to moderate temperatures in the root zone. Be on the lookout for any potential problems and remove and destroy diseased fruits, leaves, or branches.
