Why plant Cumulus Serviceberry?
Cumulus Serviceberry is what we at Bower & Branch call a “window tree.” You’ll want to have this one right outside your window so you won’t miss a minute of the show. In early spring, the aptly named Cumulus will treat you to a cloudlike display of delicate white flowers that sparkle in the sunshine. In summer, the blossoms will have transformed into plump purple-black berries, and songbirds will swoop in for an easy meal. In autumn, the show will continue with ravishing fall foliage that ranges from golden-orange to russet-red. Each season will bring a new act to the stage, and the performance will only get better with each passing year!
Serviceberry is one of those plants that is right under your nose, and you don’t even know it. There are species native to every state in the U.S. except Hawaii, yet few people are familiar with any of them. Most Serviceberries are large suckering shrubs or small multi-stemmed trees. Many years ago, William Flemer, III of Princeton Nurseries in New Jersey set out to breed a Serviceberry that didn’t sucker and was more treelike than existing ones. He came up with Cumulus, which he found to not only sucker less and grow in a more upright manner than other selections, but to also grow faster and resist snow and ice loads better with its strong, thick branches. He patented the tree in 1972.
How to use Cumulus Serviceberry in the landscape?
The birds are fond of the sweet berries of Cumulus Serviceberry, but you may want to keep the fruits for yourself. They taste a little like blueberries, and like blueberries they’re packed with healthy antioxidants. Try them on your morning cereal or use them in pies, pancakes, preserves, muffins, or smoothies.
Planting Zones
Hardiness Zones: 4-8
How To Plant Cumulus Serviceberry
Fall color on the Cumulus Serviceberry will be most intense in full sun, but the foliage quality will be best if the tree receives some shade during the hottest part of the day. The soil should be enriched with organic matter, moist but well drained. A generous layer of wood chips or shredded bark mulch will help to hold in moisture and moderate temperatures in the root zone.
How To Water
Cumulus Serviceberry will appreciate regular water during its first few years in the ground and irrigation during long dry spells after it’s established.
How To Fertilize
Incorporate Elements Starter Plant food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.
How To Prune
Due to the compact size, pruning is not necessary. However, prune out suckers promptly if they do appear! Be sure to keep trimmers and other lawn equipment away from the trunk, as the bark of Cumulus—like all Serviceberries—is thin and vulnerable to damage.

Shipping Delays:
From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.
How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
