Why the Legacy® Sugar Maple?
Plant a Legacy Sugar Maple tree and enjoy the colors of a New England autumn leaf tour in your own backyard! You’ll have plenty of photo opportunities when this classic American shade tree turns fluorescent orange and red in fall. In summer, your favorite spot on a Sunday afternoon just might become a comfy hammock under a ceiling of Sugar Maple tree leaves, and you and your family will probably find yourselves wanting to share more meals outdoors in this majestic Maple’s cooling shade. In winter, you might even try tapping your own maple syrup! A large, long-lived, noble tree, Legacy Sugar Maple truly is a legacy tree that will be enjoyed by your family and cherished by generations to come.
Nurseryman Bill Wandell left quite a legacy in the form of trees he brought into the world. The one that bears the name ‘Legacy’ was a seedling at his Illinois nursery in 1967. It outperformed its 199 siblings, growing faster, and producing thicker, glossier leaves—and more of them. He didn’t rush the new tree to market, but trialed it for 14 years, making sure it was worthy of introduction. He wanted to get it right. He knew what those trees would mean to future generations. On planting trees Wandell once said, “Have you ever noticed that the first things folks do when they visit their old neighborhood is to drive past the home where they used to live just to see how big the trees have grown? I reckon you're doing people a favor when you get them to plant a tree.''
How to use in the landscape?
Sugar Maples are the epitome of the fall season - and this Legacy is no exception! Glossy dark green leaves throughout summer transform into brilliant shades of red and orange in fall. This hardy tree is resistant to drought and leaf tatter (tattered leaves are just icky!). Legacy Sugar Maple is a dense tree which makes it an excellent choice for a lawn tree, screen, shade, specimen, or street tree. The Legacy continues!

How To Plant
Sugar Maples = awesome fall color and maple syrup to boot! They are easy to grow and you can plant them in practically any sunny location, just make sure the soil is not too wet or too dry. Sugar Maples grow at a rate that is “just right” – not like the fast-growing Red Maples or the slow-growing Norway Maples. Sugar Maples will brighten your cool, autumn days and autumn is the best time to pay it back by fertilizing. Supply it with a dose of medium rate fertilizer for the first few years. This will help your tree produce healthy new growth for the upcoming spring season. Just like the Red and Norway Maples, Sugar Maples have no major pest or disease problems. One thing that is different, however, is that Sugar Maples don’t have the usual problem with surface roots, giving you more space to plant lots and lots of shade-loving plants!
How To Water
Sugar Maples will appreciate regular water during its first few years in the ground and irrigation during long dry spells after it’s established.
How To Fertilize
Incorporate Elements Starter Plant food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.
How To Prune
Sugar Maples in general don’t need a lot of attention when it comes to pruning as it is in their nature to grow quickly, in a canopy shape.
Hardiness Zone: 4-8
How Does Shipping Work?
Bower & Branch Trees, the real BIG trees, don’t fit in a box! Our large trees require expert delivery and care, that means our large trees are shipped on Bower & Branch trucks. We are the only ones who know how to ship our big and bigger trees and plants with tender loving care.
We deliver your trees and plants directly to your driveway or curbside! Ask Bower & Branch about planting services and rates – we'd be happy to assist in installation.
*Big trees, Size XL (A) and bigger, will take approximately 2 to 4 weeks days to be delivered. - Sizes large (AA) and smaller (Treelings) will be shipped directly to your home by a local common carrier in a plant-safe box.
How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health.. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
