Why plant Overdam Feather Reed Grass?

A neat and tidy Fringe that pops! Overdam Feather Reed Grass features green leaf blades that are generously striped with creamy white, making this elegant small accent a real standout in your landscape. In late spring or early summer, airy pinkish plumes emerge that seem to hover above the pretty foliage, swaying in the breeze. Soon, the plumes turn into narrow, biscuit-colored spikes, and the whole plant takes on a rather rigid, formal appearance. Overdam will bring a cheery splash of variegation as well as a perky vertical element to any of the beds or borders around your home.

Feather Reed Grass originated in Europe as a hybrid that spontaneously occurred in the wild. Celebrated German nurseryman Karl Foerster was the first to identify the hybrid, and the most popular form of this Fringe is named after him. Overdam is the variegated little brother to Karl Foerster Feather Reed Grass, growing slower and staying smaller than its green-leaved relative. Both of these Fringes have become the darlings of landscape architects in recent years because of their easygoing nature and their many charms. We think you’ll fall in love with them, too!

How to use Overdam Feather Reed Grass in the landscape?

Overdam Feather Reed Grass sets little to no viable seed, so it will never become invasive, unlike some other ornamental grasses. Overdam is an ecologically responsible choice. This Fringe will stay put and won’t show up where it isn’t wanted.

Planting Zones

Hardiness Zone: 4-9

How To Plant Overdam Feather Reed Grass

Plant Overdam Feather Reed Grass in sun to part shade. This Fringe prefers a climate with cool summer nights and may struggle in the South. Give it a shady site if you do try to grow it in a hot, humid region. Overdam will need moist but well-drained soil and can handle clay as long as it doesn’t stay too soggy.

How To Water

When watering any kind of Feather Reed Grass, you will want to water it at least twice a week. Use your finger to check if the soil is dry about two inches down from the surface. If it is dry, give your plant a good long drink.

How To Fertilize

Feed at in early spring with an all natural fertilizer such as Bower & Branch Elements™ Fertilizer.

How To Prune

Enjoy the spiky seed-heads and buff-colored foliage tufts through the winter, then cut the plant back before new growth commences in early spring.
