Why plant Katsura Tree?
The Katsura tree is a magnificent, underused shade tree that will lend both an air of elegance and fun to your landscape. This fast-growing tree develops a dome-like canopy of foliage to shade a quiet space below for reading, relaxing, or daydreaming. You’ll stare up at the neat, scalloped, heart-shaped leaves and feel the worries of the day melt away. In fall, your Katsura tree will light up the block when its green foliage turns a luminous yellow—maybe even taking on apricot tones. As the leaves fall, they give off a delicious fragrance of cotton candy. You’ll laugh as passersby stop in their tracks and look around for the source of the sweet scent!
Thomas Hogg Sr. was a well-known nurseryman in London who came to America in 1822 to start his own nursery. He had two sons, Thomas Jr., who became a diplomat in Japan for President Abraham Lincoln, and James who stayed home to run the family nursery business on 23rd and Broadway in New York. While in Japan ,Thomas would send his brother seeds from different plants to propagate, including the Katsura tree in 1865. Soon the nursery was producing some wonderful Japanese plants. Together, they are responsible for introducing a wide assortments of plants to this country. The Katsura tree grows considerably taller in its native Japan. There, the wood is used for cabinetmaking and paneling.
How to use Katsura Tree in the landscape?
This large shade tree is our 2005 Beneficial Tree of the Year! Katsura tree's are probably best known for their absolutely gorgeous fall color, but before we get to that…the new leaves on these beauties emerge with a reddish-purple color to them and change to bluish-green in summer. The fall color is undeniably beautiful in all shades of yellow and apricot! (Now's the time you look at the picture and oooohhhh and aaaahhhh...go ahead, we won't watch to see how goofy you look doing it). Plant these colorful trees in your front yard as a single specimen tree so all your neighbors can also enjoy this sweet smelling sensation! Use the Katsura tree to line your long driveway or along roadsides!

How To Plant Katsura Tree
Katsura tree is a large, fast growing tree that likes full sun and moist soil, not too wet and not too dry. Katsura will succeed when planted in average to good organic soil with good drainage. Be sure to water periodically during times of drought. When planted in the right location, Katsura will reward you with years of beauty. No major pest or disease problems. Low maintenance and a kaleidoscope of foliage color!
How To Water
Water twice weekly for the first 3-5 weeks; then water weekly for the remainder of the year until winter. When you water, water very slowly and very thoroughly. The water needs to reach to the bottom of the root ball and that takes time. Watering needs may be altered due to extreme weather conditions.
How To Fertilize
Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant Food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. If planting in the fall, use Elements Fertilizer while planting and start your regular annual fertilizing the following fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established as it gives your tree the nutrients it needs to produce lush new growth for the following spring.
How To Prune
Prune low hanging, damaged or weak branches off as necessary in late winter.

Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.
How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
