Why plant Double Play Doozie® Spirea?
No wasted energy here! Double Play Doozie is an absolute energy saver, we may able to learn a thing or two from it. Instead of dedicating energy to producing seeds and spreading around the landscape, Doozie takes all the extra energy and puts it towards continuous blooms that are dazzling to view. The reddish-purple blooms bunch their dainty selves together to form nice little cluster balls ripe for picking. Don't forget the foliage, the leaves make quite the statement growing in bright red so you don't miss them in the landscape. An old landscape favorite, you wouldn't think that an oldie-but-goodie could offer so much!
With the goal of creating a non-invasive and no-seed spirea, professor Thomas Ranney from NC University got right to work. Utilizing a popular Japanese species, Spiraea japonica, Ranney was able to create Doozie Spirea. This variety held the non-invasive qualities and bright flowers that were desired. Doozie Spirea was patented in 2019 under the name 'NCSX2' and is marketed by Spring Meadow Nursery, Inc. in Michigan under their Double Play line of spirea shrubs.
How to use Double Play Doozie® Spirea in the landscape?
Doozie is a flowering beauty, but will not overstep it's welcome. This spirea variety is grown for its infertile habit and the stunning purple flowers that this plant offers. New leaves sprout bright red, yellow and orange instead of the common green of other plants. As the seasons change and the plant matures, Doozie's foliage will change to green over the summer. In fall, you'll be able to enjoy purple, red, yellow, and golden leaves that rival that of colorful tree leaves. Doozie also offers an abundance of summer flowers in purple-pink that compliment the bright foliage and add a nice touch to this unique shrub.
