Why plant Appalachian Spring Dogwood?

You’ll get your money’s worth with an Appalachian Spring Flowering Dogwood! No other tree offers so much—gorgeous flowers, long-lasting fall color, an elegant outline, interesting bark, not to mention nectar for pollinators and fruit for songbirds. To top it off, this selection boasts better resistance to the dreaded Dogwood anthracnose disease than any Flowering Dogwood sold today. Plant Appalachian Spring outside your picture window, where you can watch its parade of colors throughout the year and be entertained by the flocks of birds in fall and winter that will applaud your fine choice. One of the best all-around flowering trees you can buy.

Appalachian Spring Dogwood is a true survivor. When Dogwood anthracnose spread to Maryland in the 1980s, some local populations were nearly wiped out. Trees in moist, shady understories were hit the hardest, and one of these unfortunate areas was on Catoctin Mountain near the Presidential Camp David Retreat. By 1990, most Dogwoods there had died of the disease, but one remained. That tree was Appalachian Spring. Researchers at the University of Tennessee propagated it and did further testing to ensure that it really was resistant to the disease that had struck down so many others. It was, and Appalachian Spring was introduced to the trade in 1998.

How to use Appalachian Spring Dogwood in the landscape?

Exhibits a multitude of viewing capabilities! From the blooms of spring to the wonderful lush green foliage through the summer months into fabulous shades of red in the fall. Brings both birds and butterflies to any landscape. Known to have 100% resistance to anthracnose which is a fungal disease that affects most native dogwoods.

How To Plant Appalachian Spring Dogwood

Plant Appalachian Spring Dogwood in sun or light shade, preferably in an area with good air circulation. This tree tolerates clay and prefers an acid soil like that found in much of the Eastern U.S. Although Appalachian Spring is highly resistant to anthracnose, it is rather susceptible to a less serious disease called powdery mildew. Except in severe cases, this is usually no more than a cosmetic problem and will be worse in some years and better in others due to weather. The most effective and environmentally friendly prevention is proper care and feeding. High nitrogen fertilizers and overhead watering contribute most directly to the problem.

How To Water

The Appalachian Spring Dogwood requires more moist soil types, so we do suggest you water once a week or (weather depending) more, if needed.

How To Fertilize

We recommend fertilizing at least twice a year: once in early spring, before the blooms take hold and once again in late summer. Here at Bower & Branch we offer Elements Starter Plant Food to satisfy all your trees fertilizer needs!

How To Prune

Pruning should take place during the trees dormant stages, in either late fall or during the winter season. The dogwood tree does a great job of keeping its shape, however, when considering pruning, we recommend a more simple approach. Cutting off any dead or damaged branches, undersized twigs or branches for better sun and air circulation in the canopy, as well as suckers that may grow from the base of the tree. We recommend removing the suckers is because they will take energy from the tree itself, preventing proper growth.

Please expect orders with multiple items to be delivered over a number of days as a result. Orders made up of numerous items or selections will not arrive at your home on the same day.

Shipping Delays:

From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
