Why plant Indian Magic Flowering Crabapple?

Many, if not most, of the Crabapple trees from your grandmother’s time have been pushed to the side in recent years by new-and-improved varieties developed by breeders. The older varieties that have hung around have only done so by being truly spectacular, and Indian Magic is one of those special survivors. In spring, this dazzling ornamental tree will grace your yard with a magnificent display of raspberry-pink blossoms. By fall, it will delight you with an over-the-top show of brilliant orange crabapple fruits by the hundreds. The neighborhood birds will love them, too—but it may take them the whole winter to eat them all!

Simpson Nursery in Vincennes, Indiana is one of the oldest nurseries in the country, having been established in 1851, when salesmen traveling by horse and buggy were the norm. The Simpsons used smart farming methods to turn a barren tract of mismanaged farmland into a thriving orchard. When Bob Simpson took the reins in 1968, he shifted the focus to nursery stock, specializing in Crabapples, Hawthorns, and Hollies. The original ‘Indian Magic’ was a seedling of his in 1955. Somehow, its two red-fruited parents produced an offspring with pumpkin-orange crabapples.

How to use Indian Magic Flowering Crabapple in the landscape?

Indian Magic Crabapple is a rather small ornamental flowering tree that would be perfect in cottage or city gardens. Beautiful pink flowers appear in spring which the honeybees love and small orange crabapples appear in late summer/early fall - a timely treat for the birds.

Planting Zones

Hardiness Zone: 4-8

How To Plant Indian Magic Flowering Crabapple

Flowering Crabapples grow well in a wide range of soil conditions but prefer a well-draining, moist soil. They should be planted in a sunny area of your yard; they can tolerate very light shade as well.

How To Water

As with all trees, keep your newly planted Crabapple watered. It is best to do so slowly, deeply, and thoroughly every three to four days for the first growing season. Don’t keep the soil too wet, however, moist soil is fine. Once established, the Indian Magic will be drought tolerant.

How To Fertilize

Crabapples also like fertilizer, the more you give them – the more they grow. When planting, we recommend applying the Bower & Branch Starter Plant Food to ensure your tree has everything it needs as it gets settled. For ongoing care, once a year apply a simple tree fertilizer during fall to help promote new growth and flowers for the following season.

How To Prune

Pruning Flowering Crabapples is fairly easy. In late winter, prune out any damaged, diseased, or crossed branching. Be sure to cut off any suckers around the base of your tree whenever they appear as they can inhibit the growth of your tree.

Your trees and plants are grown across the United States at various Bower & Branch Growers. Depending on your location, your plant orders may be shipped from various locations. Please expect orders with multiple items to be delivered over a number of days as a result. Orders made up of numerous items or selections will not arrive at your home on the same day.

Shipping Delays:

From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
