Why plant Alley Cat Redbud?
Found growing wild in an alley, the Alley Cat Variegated Eastern Redbud Tree has turned out to be one sweet and adorable charmer when brought into the garden and shown a little love. Featuring lavender-pink flowers that hug the branches in spring and pretty heart-shaped leaves splashed with white variegation, this handsome ornamental tree will steal your heart. Alley Cat Redbud is a medium-sized tree that will fit into most gardens, yet it eventually grows big enough to sit under (if I fits, I sits!) during the dog days of summer. The purrfect addition to your entryway garden or backyard living space.
Native to much of the eastern U.S., the Eastern Redbud Tree is that showy tree you see near woodland edges adding a pop of early spring color to the roadsides with its masses of small pink flowers. It brings a warm golden glow to those same areas in fall with its changing leaves. The Alley Cat Redbud Tree was discovered by plantsman Allen Bush in an alley near his home in Louisville, Kentucky. Unlike some other variegated Redbuds, the new tree hows an alley cat toughness; the foliage doesn’t scorch in sun, nor does the variegation fade in hot weather. Some believe it’s the best variegated Redbud on the market!
How to use Alley Cat Redbud in the landscape?
Pluck a Redbud flower the next time they’re blooming, and take a close look. The blossoms look like tiny hummingbirds! In most areas, hummingbirds arrive too late to enjoy their nectar, though bees and other valuable early-season pollinators will gladly service the flowers. The blooms themselves are edible to humans, and they make a lovely garnish for a fresh spring salad. Plant this medium-sized charming tree in an area where you're able to enjoy it!

How To Plant Alley Cat Redbud
Alley Cat Eastern Redbud is an adaptable tree, but selecting its planting location carefully and paying it some kindness will result in a much healthier and happier tree. Though it performs admirably in full sun, this Redbud Tree is better off in dappled shade or in a site with morning sun and afternoon shade, at least in very warm regions. It isn’t picky about soils, but will quickly use up all of its nine lives if drainage is poor. Give it a layer of wood or bark mulch to replicate the woodsy conditions it prefers in the wild.
How To Water
Alley Cat Redbud will appreciate regular water during its first few years in the ground and irrigation during long dry spells after it’s established.
How To Fertilize
Incorporate Elements Starter Plant food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.
How To Prune
Redbuds occasionally sprout "suckers" around the base of the tree, as they appear be sure to prune them off. But when it comes to pruning the branches of your Redbud -- don't be afraid! They are so easy to prune -- prune to whatever shape you like. If you don't want to touch it -- that's fine. If you want to cut everything off except two branches that look like rabbit ears, that's fine too (although you might get some weird looks from the neighbors -- and your family).

Shipping Delays:
From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.
How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
