Why plant Heritage® River Birch?
Birch trees are renowned for their beautiful bark, and Heritage® River Birch is no exception. All year long, its shaggy peaches-and-cream-colored bark will be a standout in your landscape. Planting this fast-growing tree at one or more corners of your home is a classic way to frame your house and soften its edges. Landscape lighting adds extra drama at night. Have a low spot in your yard that stays soggy? Don’t go through all the effort of digging a French drain—plant a River Birch tree instead! This adaptable tree will happily soak up the extra moisture, though it doesn’t require wet soil to thrive.
Earl Cully, a nurseryman from Jacksonville, Illinois noticed an unusual cultivar of birch growing at a residence in St. Louis, Missouri. He made two more trips to St. Louis before he asked the homeowner if he could take some cuttings of the tree. Because of the lovely white peeling bark, he thought it was a hybrid of Paper bark Birch and River Birch. After years of study they concluded that the tree he discovered was an unknown cultivar of the native river birch and he was awarded the patent in 1979.
How to use Heritage® River Birch in the landscape?
You'll be crying a river when you see this beautiful Birch! The creamy white bark starts to peel at a young age, exposing shades of salmon and brown, which darken as the tree matures. This fast-growing selection of the native River Birch displays glossy green leaves throughout summer that turn to golden yellow in fall. They are best grown as multi-stemmed trees and are suitable for areas prone to being wet a good part of the year. Winner of the Gold Medal Plant Award from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, chosen for its outstanding performance, hardiness and eye-appeal.

How To Plant Heritage® River Birch
River Birch is usually grown in a clump form, but maybe a clean, simple single-trunk is more your style. And why not? Sometimes a “traditional” tree habit is what you’re after, and Heritage® grows perfectly fine that way, too. It’s a fast-growing tree—even faster in moist soil, like in that troublesome low spot in your yard. It’s adaptable and easy-to-please, equally at home in places that have -25°F winters and 90°F summers—or both! Heritage® River Birch won’t even complain if a bit of rock salt is shoveled its way.
How To Water
Water - Water - Water! It's tough to over water a River Birch, especially when freshly planted. Your River Birch will appreciate regular water during its first few years in the ground (especially during the summer heat!) and irrigation during long dry spells after it’s established.
How To Fertilize
Feed your Heritage River Birch once or twice a year depending on how its doing. We recommend using our Elements Starter Plant Food in the growing season.
How To Prune
Prune in summer if necessary, as Birches tend to “bleed” sap profusely when cut at other times of the year.

Please expect orders with multiple items to be delivered over a number of days as a result. Orders made up of numerous items or selections will not arrive at your home on the same day.
Shipping Delays:
From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.
How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
