Why plant Armstrong Red Maple?
Armstrong Red Maple is a majestic, fast-growing shade tree that gives the impression of strength and quiet confidence with its tall, columnar, stand-at-attention habit. On breezy days, it shows a playful side too as its long-stemmed leaves flutter in the wind, flashing their silvery undersides. Whether used as a single bold specimen or lined elegantly along your street, driveway, or property border, this low-maintenance tree will give your landscape structure all year long. Armstrong's fall color ranges from peachy-gold to a delightful mix of deep red, orange, and yellow - ending the year with an exhilarating show!
Armstrong is a selection of our native Red Maple, which grows wild throughout most of the Eastern U.S. Some say it has some Silver Maple blood in it, too (Silver Maple is another native that hybridizes readily with Red Maple). This sleek columnar form was discovered by Newton Armstrong of Windsor, Ohio (near Cleveland) in 1947. There’s also an ‘Armstrong II’ floating around, named in 1960, which was supposed to have brighter fall color than the original. It’s now believed that ‘Armstrong’ and ‘Armstrong II’ are the same tree.
How to use Armstrong Red Maple in the landscape?
Don't just get strong, get Armstrong! This fast growing columnar red maple is sure to brighten up any garden: small or large! Beautiful silver-gray bark is topped with green foliage throughout spring and summer but changes to shades of red, orange and yellow in fall.
Hardiness Zone: 4-8
How To Plant Armstrong Red Maple
Red Maples are one of those trees that you plant and don’t worry about afterwards. In other words – it’s easy to grow! These fast-growing Maples like soaking up sunshine so be sure to plant it in sunny location. Red Maples also do fairly well in most soil conditions as long as the soil has good drainage. Once established, your tree will be more tolerant of wet soil conditions. Red Maples don’t have any major pest or disease problems, which is wonderful. One slight inconvenience you might encounter is their surface roots. These surface roots make it difficult for anything to grow underneath them – grass or plants (a great spot for a sitting area if you ask me). If you can overcome this minor detail, you got yourself a beautiful shade tree with gorgeous red fall color! Tolerates heat well too!
How To Water
Water twice weekly for the first 3-5 weeks; then water weekly for the remainder of the year until winter. When you water, water very slowly and very thoroughly. The water needs to reach to the bottom of the root ball and that takes time. Watering needs may be altered due to extreme weather conditions.
How To Fertilize
Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant Food granular form on an annual basis each fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established as it gives your tree the nutrients it needs to produce lush new growth for the following spring.
How To Prune
Red Maples generally don’t need a lot of attention when it comes to pruning but if shaping is needed, it is best to prune in late winter to early spring.

How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health.. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
