Why plant Ace of Hearts Redbud?
Honey, I shrunk the Redbud! Ace of Hearts Redbud is a pocket-sized version of our beloved native Eastern Redbud tree. This dwarf tree has all the great attributes of its big sisters—soft purple flowers on zigzag branches in spring, clear yellow foliage in fall—but on a compressed framework. Ace of Heart’s leaves are glossy like playing cards and are stacked almost on top of one another, like the losing hand in a game of “Go Fish.” Slip this darling Redbud into any of the planting beds around your home, and it will be the star without overwhelming the space. A row of trees along your property line makes a handsome summer privacy screen.
In 1997, Paul Woody of Morgantown, North Carolina bought 300 to 400 Redbud seedlings to grow on at his nursery for resale a few years later. When the time came to dig the trees in 2000, Woody noticed that two trees were smaller than the rest. Another nurseryman might have grubbed them, thinking they were a couple of duds, but Woody knew better and kept them. It’s a good thing he did! One became ‘Little Woody’ and the other ‘Ace of Hearts’—two pint-sized cuties that are perfect for small gardens.
How to use Ace of Hearts Redbud in the landscape?
This dwarf, compact Redbud has light violet pea-like flowers that appear in early spring. Its small, green, heart-shaped leaves soon follow and turn to shades of yellow in fall. With its petite stature, it makes an excellent specimen in small gardens or accent in a larger garden. For added pizazz, plant Pansies, Creeping Phlox, Woodland Phlox, and mid- to late-season Daffodils around the base. They all bloom at the same time as Ace of Hearts, and will add another brushstroke of color to an already charming spring picture!

How To Plant Ace of Hearts Redbud
Ace of Hearts tends to be happiest in a moist, well draining soil - it doesn’t like soggy soil, but is adaptable in other respects. It tolerates both acidic and alkaline soils, growing naturally in both situations. As a natural understory tree, it flourishes in full sun or part-shade white handling winter lows to -15°F or -20°F. Keep plantings underneath the tree low so you can show off its lovely form as it matures.
How To Water
When freshly planted, it is imperative to water your Ace of Hearts Redbud deeply, slowly, and thoroughly as this will encourage the roots to grow deeper into the soil, which will promote a stronger more resilient tree. Deep watering should occur every two to three days in the following weeks and through summer if spring planted. After that, deep watering can lessen to every five to six days.
As your Ace of Hearts becomes established, it is mildly drought-tolerant, however, during excessively dry periods, you should supplement watering. Keep in mind that environmental factors - temperature, rainfall and soil conditions - will alter the watering needs. If you have specific questions regarding the watering of your tree, contact our Plant Whisperers for guided watering assistance.
How To Fertilize
Redbuds like fertilizer! We recommend using the Bower & Branch Starter Plant Food when planting as it will add vital nutrients that will help promote a stronger root system and a larger root mass, encouraging your tree to establish itself faster. Repeat your fertilizer application each spring and fall for the first three years to be sure your tree has everything it needs to get a head start.
How To Prune
When looking to prune your Ace of Hearts Redbud, it is best to do so in late winter to early spring, while the tree is dormant. Pruning at this time allows you to see the branching structure without the foliage obstructing your view. Remove any branching that appears damaged or any cross branching that you can see. As a dwarf tree, pruning is not required but is beneficial to promote healthy growth and enhance the overall shape of your tree.

Shipping Delays:
From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.
How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
