Why plant Columnar Blue Spruce?
Want a Blue Spruce, but don’t think you have the room? Columnar Blue Spruce may be the answer. This tall, skinny specimen fits easily into spaces too narrow for most evergreen trees. This fastigiate-form Colorado Spruce has a formal look suitable for neat, manicured landscapes, and though its tightly branched, stand-at-attention habit makes it seem as if it’s been meticulously pruned, your shears will never leave the shed. The only maintenance you may perform on this cool blue conifer is a yearly stringing of lights when you turn it into a living Christmas tree!
Colorado Spruce inhabits the Rocky Mountains of Canada and the U.S. It’s a nice but ho-hum tree in its usual wild form: a tall, snow-shedding pyramid, carrying fresh green needles all year-round. When it was discovered that powder-blue specimens could be had, however, the tree rocketed to the top of many wish lists. It became the go-to accent plant in Northern gardens across the country (it struggles in the Southeast). This columnar variety first appeared in Canada around 1987 and made it to the U.S. a few years later.
How to use Columnar Blue Spruce in the landscape?
A Blue Spruce for those tight spaces! This is one upright, columnar evergreen! Columnar Blue Spruce showcases steel blue foliage, the new growth displays an even more intense blue color. You just can't pass this one up!

How To Plant Columnar Blue Spruce
Lots of people have planted Blue Spruce trees too close to the house, and the next owner of the house has cursed them for it. Don’t get cursed out—plant this slim variety instead! This tree isn’t difficult to grow. Full sun is a prerequisite, as is well-drained soil. It should never need pruning. (Thank goodness! It’s a prickly fella.) Blue Spruces are slow-growing trees, so you can understand how much a good-sized specimen can add to the value of a home…unless it’s smushed up against the house!
How To Water
After receiving your Columnar Blue Spruce, you should be watering your plant regularly to help establish the roots. In dry periods, you should again be watering regularly to ensure your tree survivability.
How To Fertilize
You should be feeding your Columnar Blue Spruce in spring and summer. We recommend using our Elements Starter Plant Food in granular form.
How To Prune
Pruning is not really needed! If you want to prune for shape, then you can prune away any branches that are beyond the tree’s natural shape.
How Does Shipping Work?
Size Small (AAA), Medium (A2A), and Large (AA) plants (our Treelings, Shrubs, Bushes, and Perennials) will be shipped directly to your home by a common carrier. Ships in a plant-safe designed box within 5-7 business days.
How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health.. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
