Why plant Commemoration® Sugar Maple?
Commemoration® Sugar Maple is a fast-growing shade tree that will provide a blazing orange backdrop to backyard touch football games, autumn grill outs, and s’mores by the fire pit. This new variety of Sugar Maple was an early standout because of its remarkably thick, dark, waxy leaves. The leathery quality of the leaves helps them hold up better in the elements; they’re less likely to scorch in very hot summers or to tatter in windy locations. It was noted that Commemoration® Sugar Maple begins to turn color (orange with hints of red and pink) 10 to 14 days before most other Sugar Maples and manages to hold its color after most others have dropped their foliage. This long-lived tree is strong and rugged, yet lovely in all seasons, and it will stand tall and proud for generations to come.
A majestic native tree cherished for its magnificent fall color and handsome form—not to mention as the source of maple syrup—the Sugar Maple Tree has a special place in nearly every northerner’s heart. (This is also the leaf on the Canadian flag.) The Commemoration® Sugar Maple was selected by the late Willet “Bill” Wandell of Champaign, Illinois from a crop of seedlings at his nursery. The tree stood out right away, he said, because it grew five feet the first year, and it continued to grow twice as fast as other Sugar Maples. It was introduced in the early 1980s and continues to be one of the finest selections on the market.
How to use Commemoration® Sugar Maple in the landscape?
Planted in your front yard, its brilliant orange fall foliage will stop leaf-peepers in their tracks as they pass by. The aptly named Commemoration® Sugar Maple is also a wonderful legacy tree to plant in honor of a loved one. Plant a row along your property line for a strong shade tree with a vibrant fall showing.
Planting Zones
Hardiness Zone: 4-8
How To Plant Commemoration® Sugar Maple
Sugar Maples perform best in cool northern climates, although Commemoration® is more forgiving than most of heat and humidity. It will be slower growing and have more of a yellow-orange fall color in the South. Plant this regal tree in full sun to light shade in rich, well-drained soil and water regularly. A layer of wood or bark mulch will help keep the roots cool and moist. In most cases, Commemoration® is not a great tree for the city, but in suburban and neighborhoods where the tree can stretch out its roots and isn’t bothered by pollution, it is stellar.
How To Water
During the first few years, it is important to water your Commemoration® Sugar Maple slowly, deeply, and thoroughly to ensure that your tree is receiving the necessary water. When first planted, water your tree this way every three to four days for the first growing season, lessening as you enter into fall and winter. The following year, water every five to six days, more so in periods of drought.
How To Fertilize
When planting, we recommend that you fertilize with the Bower & Branch Starter Plant Food. Simply mix it in the hole before planting, and over top as you apply your compost and mulch. Reapply in Spring and Fall for at least the first three years to ensure your tree has the nutrients it needs to established itself well.
How To Prune
The best time to prune your Commemoration® Sugar Maple is when it is dormant in late winter to early spring. Remove any damaged or diseased branching, as well as branches that are crossed to maintain the integrity of the tree. You may also structurally prune to control the over size and shape of your tree.

Shipping Delays:
From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.
How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
