Why plant Dwarf Golden Barberry?

Compact growth habit with explosive yellow hues, the Dwarf Golden Barberry begins spring with lush vibrant foliage that takes a drastic turn in the fall when it transitions to a bright red foliage before the dormancy of the year. Aside from the vibrant change in color, the Dwarf Golden Barberry also provides bright red berries that are loved by birds as a fall snack! With sharp and spiny thorns on the stems, this dwarf barberry offers fantastic deer and pest resistance - just be sure to watch yourself as those barbs will get you too!

Native to Japan and China, the Japanese Barberry was introduced to the Arnold Arboretum in 1875. With this introduction, the Japanese cultivar slowly became the replacement for the European Barberry due to its resistance of black stem rust. Later, in the 1950’s, a Japanese Barberry with yellow foliage was discovered and thus, the creation of the Dwarf Golden Barberry came to be!

How to use Dwarf Golden Barberry in the landscape?

If you've got a spot in your landscape where nothing else seems to thrive, then the Dwarf Golden Barberry is exactly the plant that you need. Offering adaptability to most soils, a tolerance to drought, and the compatibility of container growth, this compact shrub adds explosive color anywhere it's used. These shrubs also offer resistance to deer and rabbits and make a great animal barrier due to its production of spines. Did we forget to mention they are low maintenance, the Dwarf Golden Barberry keeps its compact growth habit while still accepting a light trim now and then for appearances. Plant them as a low hedge or in a mass planting for a stunning show of color throughout the season!

How To Plant Dwarf Golden Barberry

The Dwarf Golden Barberry lives its best life when planted in locations that provide full sun, however, this shrub is also capable of living in areas of partial shade - but, at the cost of the vibrant gold color appearing more as a lighter green. When considering the soil requirements, you're in luck, this shrub offers the best adaptability as it is accepting of dry or moist soils, acidic or alkaline. The only caveat is that the location has decent drainage. The Dwarf Golden Barberry is low maintenance, accepting pruning if you see fit to remove dead or damaged branches or for aesthetic reasons, keeping a tighter, more compact shape.

How To Water

After your Dwarf Golden Barberry has been planted, you'll need to water deeply and thoroughly for the first year. This will help with the root system development. Once established, your Dwarf Golden Barberry will be drought resistant!

How To Fertilize

While planting, you should feed your Dwarf Golden Barberry with the Bower & Branch Elements Starter Plant Food to be sure it has all it needs for a healthy first growing season! After that, the best time to fertilize your Dwarf Golden Barberry is in early spring, before the new growth emerges for the year.

How To Prune

Pruning your Dwarf Golden Barberry is only needed if you desire to maintain a tight and compact shape. This should be done in early spring, before the flush of new growth. Simply sheer back the outer branches to reduce the size and shape it as you see fit. Take care during clean up to avoid the thorns!
