Why plant Dwarf Golden Barberry?
Native to Japan and China, the Japanese Barberry was introduced to the Arnold Arboretum in 1875. With this introduction the Japanese cultivar slowly became the replacement for the European Barberry due to its resistance of black stem rust. Later in the 1950’s a Japanese Barberry with yellow foliage was found and thus the creation of the Dwarf Golden Barberry came to be. Compact with explosive yellow hues starting in spring this lush vibrant foliage takes a drastic turn in the fall welcoming bright red foliage before the dormancy of the year. Aside from the change in color the Dwarf Golden Barberry also provides bright red berries that are loved by birds. Growing similar heights and widths of about 2-3’ allows the addition of color to smaller locations around your property.
How to use Dwarf Golden Barberry in the landscape?
If you are looking to plant in a location where the soil seems poor and void of life then the Dwarf Golden Barberry is exactly what you need. Offering adaptability to most soils, a tolerance to drought, and the compatibility of container growth this compact shrub adds explosive color anywhere it's used. These shrubs also offer resistance to deer and rabbits and make a great animal barrier due to its production of spines. Did we forget to mention they are low maintenance, the Dwarf Golden Barberry keeps its compact growth habit while still accepting a light trim now and then for appearances.

How To Plant Dwarf Golden Barberry
So you purchased a Dwarf Golden Barberry and now it's time to plant. The Dwarf Golden Barberry lives its best life when planted in locations that provide full sun, however this shrub is also capable of living in areas of partial shade at the coast of the vibrant gold color coming off now a lighter green. When considering the soil requirements, you're in luck, this shrub offers the best adaptability accepting of dry or moist soils, acidic or alkaline, we just recommend that the location does have decent drainage. The Dwarf Golden Barberry is low maintenance, accepting pruning if you see fit to remove dead or damaged branches or for aesthetic reasons keeping a tighter, more compact shape
How To Water
After planting your Dwarf Golden Barberry it's time to water. This may be accomplished by watering at minimal twice a week until established. Once established, keep an eye on the soil making sure not to let it get too dry. We recommend keeping an eye on your local weather making sure to water during periods of inclement weather such as high heat or drought.
How To Fertilize
Feeding your Dwarf Golden Barberry is as easy as can be. When first planting we recommend adding fertilizer to the planting site as the first feeding. If you planted during the spring re-apply fertilizer in late fall before the dormancy of winter. If you planted in fall, wait till spring before the push of new growth to fertilize your shrub. Remember these steps for the life of the plant and you will continue to have lavish foliage each year.
How To Prune
After planting, it's time to consider maintenance for your Dwarf Golden Barberry. This process is only necessary if you desire a tight and tidy shrub, otherwise it will provide a more natural look if left alone. We recommend if you so choose to start your process of pruning in early spring before the push of new growth. Simply sheer back the outer branches to reduce and shape the size of your Dwarf Golden Barberry and repeat the process as you see fit.
