Why plant Green Laceleaf Japanese Maple?

You can’t go wrong with a Japanese Maple tree, but the Green Weeping Japanese Maple is a special favorite of ours. This exquisite specimen tree’s smooth, muscly branches provide a solid framework for feather-soft green foliage that cascades like a waterfall to the ground. In fall, you’ll understand why we rate this laceleaf Japanese Maple so highly when its leaves turn the color of hot coals. Plant this long-lived legacy tree in a prominent spot in your landscape where it will hold court as the dominant focal point throughout the seasons and be a daily reminder of the beauty of nature to you, your family, and generations to come.

For centuries, the Japanese have appreciated the beauty of their native Japanese Maples. By 1820, the year that Japanese Maples were first grown in the Western World, the Japanese had already selected dozens of different varieties. Swedish physician Carl Peter Thunberg is credited with delivering the first of these marvelous trees to Europe. It wasn’t easy—Japan was closed at the time to outsiders, except for Dutch traders, and Thunberg had to pass himself off as a Dutchman. This threadleaf selection is a very old variety—the discoverer’s name is long forgotten.

How to use Green Laceleaf Japanese Maple in the landscape?

Simply Breathtaking! These graceful, bright green, thread-like leaves cover the cascading branches all summer. Fall's cool nights and shorter days provide a spectacular appearance as the leaves turn fiery shades of yellow, gold, and orange. A specimen tree that can easily fit into your landscape design.

Planting Zones

Hardiness Zone: 5-9

How To Plant Green Laceleaf Japanese Maple

Japanese Maples like to be planted in full sun, but would appreciate some light afternoon shade as well. Full blazing sun along with poor soil conditions can cause leaf scorch. They also would appreciate being planted in areas that get protection from wind; they do not tolerate windswept locations. Japanese Maples must be planted in soils that are well-drained; they will not tolerate wet, poor quality soils. Japanese Maples, when maintained properly, do not have any major pest or disease problems. However, they do run the risk of getting Verticillium, which is a root fungus. This occurs when the Japanese Maple is planted in soil that is not well-drained. Proper planting location will also help the burgundy-leafed Japanese Maples keep their deep, rich color. If the tree becomes stressed because of poor soil quality, or too wet/dry soil, the color of the foliage will be altered. So, what’s important? Location, location, location!

How To Water

Once you have found the perfect location to plant your Japanese Maple, it will appreciate regular water during the first few years in the ground. Be sure to keep it watered throughout dry spells until it has become established in your garden.

How To Fertilize

When freshly planted, be sure to fertilize. We recommend additional applications in spring and fall with the Elements Starter Plant Food to be sure the tree is receiving plenty of nutrients!

How To Prune

Prune Japanese Maples in the summer. If pruned in the early spring, they tend to bleed excessively. Pruning can be needed to limb up your tree, to remove crossing or damaged branches, to open up the tree structure artistically to show off the branching or to help keep your tree fuller. Pruning a little each year and not all at once will help keep your maple healthy.

Your trees and plants are grown across the United States at various Bower & Branch Growers. Depending on your location, your plant orders may be shipped from various locations. Please expect orders with multiple items to be delivered over a number of days as a result. Orders made up of numerous items or selections will not arrive at your home on the same day.

Shipping Delays:

From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
