Why plant Honeycrisp Apple?
Even though it’s often the most expensive apple at the grocery store, the Honeycrisp apple has achieved nearly cult status—it’s that good! This extra-juicy, super-sweet treat is the ultimate healthy, guilt-free snack, and when you grow a tree at home, you’ll get to have your fill and not spend a fortune at the supermarket. Why are Honeycrisp apples so expensive? A major reason is because their skin is thin, and they bruise easily in shipping, but when you grow a Honeycrisp Apple Tree in your backyard, you’ll only have to transport the fruit from the tree to your taste buds. At most, you’ll transport the fruit to your refrigerator, so that each juicy bite of this incomparable apple will become even more refreshing.
The Honeycrisp Apple Tree originated at the University of Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station in 1960. Plant breeders there were working on developing new varieties of Apple Trees that could endure the rigors of northern winters. Honeycrisp’s parents were recorded as Macoun, a McIntosh relative, and Honeygold, a previous U of M introduction. However, in a daytime TV talk show twist, genetic testing in 2004 revealed that neither Macoun nor Honeygold were actually the parents. A Minnesota Apple called Keepsake was determined to be one of the true parents; the other parent remains unknown and has never paid child support. Honeycrisp was patented in 1988.
How to use Honeycrisp Apple in the landscape?
The Honeycrisp harvest lasts a relatively long time, as this variety doesn’t ripen its fruits all at once. The extended harvest time is another pain for commercial apple producers, who would rather pick once and be done for the season, but it’s perfect for home growers, who usually prefer to have their harvest spaced out.

How To Plant Honeycrisp Apple
The Honeycrisp Apple Tree is surprisingly disease resistant and easy to please, and because it comes from Minnesota, you know it’s tolerant of the worst winter weather you can throw at it. However, all Apple Trees potentially have issues with diseases and pests and should be monitored carefully for indications of problems. Proper siting and good hygiene will go a long way towards keeping your tree healthy. Plant Honeycrisp in a sunny, open, well-drained site and provide regular irrigation. You will also need another suitable Apple Tree, such as Gala or Golden Delicious, or a Crabapple, such as Starlite, to pollinate your Honeycrisp.
How To Water
Water deeply, and regularly during its first few years in the ground. Irrigate weekly, and especially during prolonged dry spells or extreme heat after it’s established. It is essential to water your apple tree 2-3 times a week, applying the water slowly to go deeper to the root system.
How To Fertilize
Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant Food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. If planting in the fall, use Elements Fertilizer while planting and start your regular annual fertilizing the following fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established as it gives your tree the nutrients it needs to produce lush new growth for the following spring.
How To Prune
Prune your apple tree in late winter. Apples that do not get pruned will produce less and less fruit. When you prune, don't leave pruned branch stubs behind and remember that it is a learning experience and your apple will do better if you prune and have room for improvement than if you do not prune. You may need to thin the fruits, as this variety has a tendency to overproduce.

Shipping Delays:
From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.
How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
