Why plant Little Henry® Virginia Sweetspire in Bulk?
Dwarf shrubs are making a statement with different varieties and colors to choose from, Little Henry just happens to be one of these and a native as well. A very hardy and versatile plant, Little Henry will tolerate almost everything that you throw at it from full shade to wet, soggy areas around ponds not many other plants can tolerate. Summer brings with it a fireworks display of white blooms that brighten up Little Henry almost immediately. Fall also brings an explosion of brightly colored foliage with shades of gold, red, and orange that rivals that of the best fall colored trees. The question now is which dwarf shrub will you choose to plant in your landscape?
Little Henry is a dwarf cultivar of the native Virginia Sweetspire that is native to North America. Virginia Sweetspire is a part of our natural heritage, a charming Accent that’s native throughout most of the southeastern states and extending into Pennsylvania. Despite the fact that it is native here, however, the plant went virtually unnoticed by gardeners for ages. It was only in the 1980s that Virginia Sweetspire started to show up in garden centers. The reason it was overlooked for so long was because in the wild it can be a rather rangy shrub. Given a little love, it becomes a fine, floriferous Accent that you will be proud to have in your garden.
How to use Little Henry® Virginia Sweetspire in Bulk in the landscape?
This fantastic selection of a native plant brings multiple benefits to the table. Its beautiful flower show in late spring with oodles of pendulous white flower clusters and its incredible yellow, orange and red fall foliage show lasting for multiple weeks are hard to beat. It spreads by root suckering, short underground stems that allow the plant to spread out. This is a benefit when planted in the right location, especially helpful when planted on slopes and in mass plantings. When planted in a tighter spot, the root suckers can be removed each spring to control its spread.

How To Plant Little Henry® Virginia Sweetspire in Bulk
Little Henry enjoys being planted in a location that is in full sun, part shade, or even full shade. Soil requirements span from slightly acidic, average soil that is of medium to wet consistency. Soil should be well-draining as Little Henry does not appreciate overly wet feet. This is a great addition to stream sides and near ponds.
How To Water
These little guys thrive on a moderate amount of water for promising results. Remember to water well into the fall getting prepared for winter.
How To Fertilize
Fertilizing the Little Henry's® should take place in the early spring with a slow-release fertilizer. We recommend using our Elements Starter Plant Food to give your plant that extra little boost!
How To Prune
If needed, you can prune your Little Henry after flowering. However, as a dwarf form, it is not always needed!
