Why plant Miss Frances Crapemyrtle?
The Miss Frances Crapemyrtle! This plant was the first "introduced plant" to George Washington's estate in Mt. Vernon. Now, when speaking of the specific Miss Frances Crapemyrtle, what we have here is a feat of scientific engineering. In the past, breeding hybrid plants from many different species gave way to new colors, sizes of plants, as well as a resistance to diseases. Miss Frances Crapemyrtle offers stunning clusters of red flowers, dense foliage to last the whole summer, as well as an attractive winter bark. Speaking of stunning red clusters, the Miss Frances Crapemyrtle remains in a continuous bloom from late June through August. This plant also has the distinct trait of not dropping its leaves even during extreme heat and humidity. Wishing these trees would introduce birds to your garden? Well, you're in luck! Over time we noticed that the American Goldfinches seem to be particularly adapt to handling the Crapemyrtle seeds. However, we have noticed a few other species of birds also enjoying their time with this beautiful tree - just a few names are the dark-eyed juncos, northern cardinals, as well as white-throated sparrows.
Is this the product of a lab incident? Absolutely not. The Crapemyrtle (Lagerstroemia indica) has had a long history in America arriving over 150 years ago. Originating in China, these beautiful plants were brought to England first, but unfortunately, due to the climate in the U.K., refused to bloom. However, thanks to André Michaux, a French explorer and botanist who introduced the Crapemyrtle to Charleston, South Carolina, the trees were able to reach their full potential and bloom.
How to use Miss Frances Crapemyrtle in the landscape?
The illuminating effect of the bright red blooms will give a wonderful contrast either as a specimen piece or as a screen to block an unsightly view. We could also suggest planting this tree with Hydrangea, hibiscus along with Trumpet vine. Now, while this plant does well placed in a garden space complimenting others, we can not detract from the stand alone beauty. Creating a vibrant allure you will want to make sure this tree is visible at all times to enjoy the illustrious bloom.

How To Plant Miss Frances Crapemyrtle
The Miss Frances Crapemyrtle is tolerant of most soils allowing a wide variety of uses in any landscape design. For best results, the more sun, the better when considering your blooms. Although not problematic, extensive shade can cause a lack of amount and luster in the bloom itself. The resilience alone makes this tree easy to maintain for once its established they are good to go.
How To Water
When freshly planted, it's best to water your Miss Frances Crapemyrtle thoroughly and consistently for the first few weeks. Once established, watering needs are not as intense unless experiencing a drought.
How To Fertilize
Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant Food granular form on an annual basis each year. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.
How To Prune
When left to grow naturally, the Miss Frances Crapemyrtle will grow into a rounded tree about 18 - 20' tall. This tree can either be left in its tree like form with a few main stems, or encourage it to grow from the base. If you so choose to, you may enact a harder prune. Doing this will keep your Crapemyrtle tighter and more compact. This also tells us that this tree is resilient to a harder prune, allowing you to really experiment with how you would like your landscape to be designed. Always make sure to prune after the blooms to not miss out!

How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
