Why the Northern Red Oak?

Some people are lucky enough to have Northern Red Oak trees growing native on their property, standing strong and tall, sheltering and feeding local wildlife, and putting on a fine show of russet-red in fall.  The rest of us have to plant them!  Plant this fast-growing shade tree on the south side of your home to cool it in summer, while in the winter its bare branches will let in the sunshine.  Sited to the west, Red Oak’s fall foliage will seem to ignite in the setting sun.  This long-lived legacy tree is also a regal choice for lining your driveway.  Wherever it’s planted, this gentle giant is likely to stand tall and proud for many generations to come.

Northern Red Oak is a native forest tree found in the East from New England to Oklahoma.  Since pioneer days, its pink-toned wood has been used for furniture and flooring; as firewood it burns hotter than ash.  But such talk does not belong on these pages!  What we love here is the living tree, and Red Oak is one of the most majestic examples around.  The largest in the country is a multi-trunked beauty 36 feet in circumference in Monroe, New York.  It takes eight people holding hands to reach around it!

How to use in the landscape?

If red is your favorite fall tree color, then this is the tree for you! The lush, glossy green leaves turn a bold red in the fall that lights up the sky. Its broad and pyramidal shape makes for wonderful shade. If red isn't your color, once you see this tree, it will be! This handsome native tree will definitely make a bold statement in your landscape.

How To Plant

Northern Red Oak is a fast growing shade tree.  Yes, you read that right—an oak that’s fast growing!  It turns out that not all oaks are created alike.  It’s also easier to transplant than many oaks, though new nursery production methods are making all oaks more plantable.  Red Oak prefers full sun, but tolerates some shade, at least for a while—as it does in the wild when it germinates on the forest floor.  It’s a remarkably durable city tree, too, coping well with pollution and salt spray.

How To Water

Oak Trees will appreciate watering deeply, and regularly during its first few years in the ground. Irrigate weekly, and especially during long dry spells or extreme heat after it’s established.

How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.

How Does Shipping Work?

Bower & Branch Trees, the real BIG trees, don’t fit in a box! Our large trees require expert delivery and care, that means our large trees are shipped on Bower & Branch trucks. We are the only ones who know how to ship our big and bigger trees and plants with tender loving care.

We deliver your trees and plants directly to your driveway or curbside! Ask Bower & Branch about planting services and rates – we'd be happy to assist in installation.

*Big trees, Size XL (A) and bigger, will take approximately 2 to 4 weeks days to be delivered. - Sizes large (AA) and smaller (Treelings) will be shipped directly to your home by a local common carrier in a plant-safe box.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health.. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
