Why plant Ryusen Japanese Maple?
Ryusen Weeping Japanese Maple will get your creative juices flowing when you imagine all the different ways you could use this exciting new ornamental tree in your landscape. Besides its extreme weeping habit, Ryusen is also different from almost all other weeping Japanese Maples in that it isn’t a laceleaf type. Its bold, star-shaped foliage is a new look in weepers, and we like it! We also love the fiery orange tones the leaves take on in fall that make the tree look like an eruption of molten lava.
Ryusen Japanese Maple was discovered as a one-in-a-million chance seedling at Kobayashi Nursery near Tokyo in 1990. It was originally named ‘Ryu sei,’ and is sometimes sold by that name, which means “dragon spirit” in Japanese. It wasn’t until 2008 that this stunner was introduced to American gardeners by ItSaul Plants of Atlanta, Georgia. Incidentally, by arriving in the U.S. via the steamy South, Ryusen was subjected to a brutal test of heat tolerance—which it passed without breaking a sweat! This beauty has proven itself tough enough to handle the worst heat and humidity some of our country’s regions can dish out.
How to use Ryusen Japanese Maple in the landscape?
Unlike nearly all other weeping Japanese Maples, whose limbs form a wide-spreading umbrella shape in time, Ryusen’s branches weep straight down from whatever point you allow them to reach. You could stake this tree to reach a height of five feet or more and have yourself a unique columnar specimen. Or, you could train it to arch over a path, spill over the edges of a container, or flow down a hillside. The possibilities are endless!

How To Plant Ryusen Japanese Maple
This is one Japanese Maple that can flourish in full-on blazing sun, though part shade is also to its liking. They prefer soils that are moist and well-draining. Apply a layer of organic mulch around the care bed of your tree as the mulch will help maintain moisture, regulate the soil temperature, and reduce root or weed competition. Otherwise, Ryusen should be a low-maintenance and worry-free tree. Pests and diseases rarely amount to any serious concern.
How To Water
Watering your Ryusen Japanese Maple is integral to the health and vitality of your new tree. After planting, you should water your tree deeply, slowly, and thoroughly. For the first growing season, you should water every two to three days, lessening to four to five as you venture into fall.
Keep in mind that environmental factors - temperature, rainfall, and soil conditions - will alter watering needs. If you have specific questions regarding the watering of your Ryusen, contact our Plant Whisperers for guided watering assistance.
How To Fertilize
Immediately upon planting, we recommend that you apply the Bower & Branch Starter Plant Food in the hole and around the root zone, then water it in well. This will add vital nutrients that will help promote a stronger root system and a larger root mass, encouraging your Ryusen to establish itself faster. We then recommend that you repeat your fertilizer application each spring and fall for the first three years to ensure a steady supply of nutrients to your tree.
How To Prune
If you’d like to shape your Ryusen, you’ll need to stake the leader as it grows, making sure you don’t bind it too tight or leave the stake on so long that it rubs or cuts into the wood. If needed, you can prune your Ryusen in late winter to early spring, before it breaks dormancy. Doing so allows to you clearly see the branching structure and will promote vigorous growth in spring. Pruning your Ryusen is done to maintain the desired shape, to remove any damaged or dead branches or to thin out the branching - as this is a weeping tree, you'll want to prune to enhance the cascading branches.

How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
