Why plant Siberian Peashrub?
Here we have the Siberian Pea Shrub. Native to Siberia, China, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan, the Siberian Pea Shrub was brought to the United States in the mid-1700’s by Eurasian immigrants and utilized as a source of food. The Siberian Pea Shrub offers an upright growth habit maintained as a small shrub or left to grow into a small tree. This shrub is capable of reaching heights of about 15-20’ tall and spanning about 12-18’ and offers about 3’ of growth a year. The foliage of the Siberian Pea Shrub varies from lighter to dark hues of green. They produce fragrant yellow blooms starting in May, come July we can see ripened legumes containing seeds which when prepared properly are edible.
How to use Siberian Peashrub in the landscape?
Historically the Siberian Pea Shrub offered many uses such as food, dye made from the foliage, and fiber made from the bark. This shrub also offers the ability to help where erosion is an issue with its extensive root system and makes for a perfect short barrier where needed. The Siberian Pea Shrub produces seed pods that ripen in July and are loved by wildlife. Utilize this shrub in flower hedges, for screen plantings, or grown in containers which will give you ample locations to display this beauty.
Hardiness Zone: 2-8
How To Plant Siberian Peashrub
After purchasing your Siberian Pea Shrub it's time to get planting. Start by finding the right location. This shrub is capable of growing in full sun but will tolerate some partial shade. They offer adaptability to soil preference such as clay, loam, and sandy locations, while also accepting locations that are high in either acidity or alkalinity. We recommend planting in fall or spring after the threat of late spring frost, for proper planting methods check out our planting blog for further information.
How To Water
After planting you will want to make sure you are giving your plants enough water to thrive and live a healthy and happy life. We recommend watering at a minimum of twice a week until established. We also advise keeping an eye on your local weather, making sure to water accordingly during periods of high heat and drought.
How To Fertilize
At the time of planting we recommend adding fertilizer to the site where the Siberian Pea Shrub will be planted. If planting in the spring you wont need to apply fertilizer till fall just before dormancy. If you are planting in the fall the following spring will be the next time for feeding. Keep this schedule up until the shrub has become established. When that time comes you may apply fertilizer once a year if you so choose to promote healthy growth.
How To Prune
The Siberian Pea Shrub does best when pruned in late winter or early spring before the push of new growth. Depending on how you choose to display this shrub will determine the pruning that will be needed. Removing any dead or damaged portions will benefit the health and growth of the shrub while also maintaining its shape. The Siberian Pea Shrub is capable of growing to the size of a small tree. If you choose to let that happen, prune as needed to maintain the shape you are looking for as well.
