Why plant Starlite® Flowering Crabapple?
A wonderful, welcoming sight after months of ice and snow! Spring-blooming trees are a joyous sight everywhere, but they are especially appreciated in regions with long, cold winters. Starlite® Flowering Crabapple is one spring bloomer that will warm your heart, and it is cold-hardy enough to survive where temperatures drop to 50 below zero! This rugged ornamental tree will signal that spring is here at last with a profusion of pure white blossoms. Later in the year, Starlite® Flowering Crab delights again, this time with tiny, shiny red fruits. Songbirds may stop by to snack on them.
This hardy Flowering Crabapple that laughs at the cold was developed in Canada at Jeffries Nurseries in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba. One of the parents was Rosthern Siberian Crabapple, a variety named for a city even farther north than Partage La Prairie—Rosthern, Saskatchewan. The other parent was Spring Snow, a popular fruitless Crabapple selection. Many would consider Starlite® to be a marked improvement on the beloved Spring Snow, with cleaner, scab-resistant foliage (scab is a fungal disease that affects some Apples and Crabapples), and pretty red fruits that are lacking in the original. Starlite® was introduced to the public in 2009.
How to use Starlite® Flowering Crabapple in the landscape?
Starlite® inherited a very upright branching structure from its Rosthern parent. Its dapper, teardrop shape gives it a formal look, making it suitable for showcasing in the front yard. Incorporate it into your foundation plantings, plant it in an island bed, or use it as a street tree under utility wires.

How To Plant Starlite® Flowering Crabapple
The Starlite® Flowering Crabapple is easy to please and makes a good tree for novice gardeners. Plant it in an open, sunny area with good air circulation. Starlite® isn’t picky about soil and will grow even in heavy clay as long as drainage is adequate.
How To Water
After planting, water your new tree deeply, slowly, and thoroughly. For the first growing season, water this way every three to four days to keep your tree well supplied with water during the establishment period, so it can develop a strong root system. In subsequent years, it will be relatively drought tolerant.
How To Fertilize
Crabapples like fertilizer, the more you give them – the more they grow. When planting, apply the Bower & Branch Starter Plant Food to ensure your tree has the nutrients it needs to get settled. Once a year apply a simple tree fertilizer during fall to help promote new growth and flowers for the following season.
How To Prune
Do any pruning directly after blooming, except for suckers that appear at the base of the tree, which may be removed at any time. You'll want to thin the branches as the fruit begins to appear to prevent any breakage that may occur due to heavy crops. Additionally, remove any damaged or dead branching to keep your tree healthy.

Shipping Delays:
From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.
How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
