Helpful Whispers

A tree guys kind of flower!

I'm a tree guy at heart. My landscape is almost exclusively trees with only a few shrubs mixed in here and there. But there is only one perennial that this tree guy has in his landscape and that is Stella de Oro Daylily.

Easy, Easy, Easy......I have found over the years that unless your heart and passion is into gardening your landscape, perennials can be a chore to maintain and enjoy. Not so for Daylilies! They are Easy to plant, Easy to grow, Easy to maintain, and Easy to enjoy year after year. With many varieties of Daylilies to choose from such as Happy Returns, Pardon Me, Passionate Returns and Rosy Returns, Stella de Oro is my favorite with its vibrant yellow flowers. The flower show lasts for weeks as this perennial continues to produce flower buds over an extended period of time.

I even think its grass-like foliage is attractive before and after it blooms.

I highly recommend planting these in groups, apart 1.5-2', to produce a mass of texture and color. Another tip would be about midsummer you should remove any spent flower stems. Cut the stems low to the ground so not to see them sticking up through the leaves. This not only cleans up its appearance but will also force the plant's energies to be put into roots to regenerate for next season.

I've even cut the foliage back half way in midsummer and was rewarded with fresh new growth and some late summer flowers that just seem to never stop.

Why plant Stella de Oro Daylily?

Number one! Daylily varieties number in the tens of thousands, but Stella de Oro Daylily is the best rebloomer of all. Plant it in your landscape, and this tireless Spirit will keep churning out its sunny golden blossoms all season long. It’s amazing! We love Stella de Oro for its petite size as well. It makes a cute accent for the front of any border. Novice gardeners will love it for how easy it is to grow. Sun and some water during dry spells are all it needs to thrive. It asks for little, but gives so much!

Daylilies are one of gardeners’ most beloved Spirits, and with good reason. These tough, adaptable plants offer stunning blooms in a wide array of colors, sizes, and shapes. Some are fragrant, too. They’re easy to hybridize, and professionals and amateurs alike have come up with winning new forms. A farmer from Merriville, Indiana, by the name of Walter Jablonski introduced Stella de Oro in 1975. His was the first strongly reblooming Daylily on the market, and even though more than 60,000 Daylily selections have now been officially registered, Stella remains the best rebloomer you can buy.

How to use Stella de Oro Daylily in the landscape?

“Stella de Oro” means “Gold Star” in Italian. It should really be “Stella d’Oro,” if you want to be grammatically correct, but we’ll let it slide. By any name, this is one top-notch Daylily with its nonstop blooms and cheerful disposition!

How To Plant Stella de Oro Daylily

A full-sun site will yield the most blooms; very light shade is acceptable, too. Stella de Oro Daylily will grow in any soil with decent drainage. Rich, organic, but free-draining ground is ideal. Water well during establishment and during dry spells.

How To Water

Water as soon as they arrive! Daylilies need to be watered regularly to maintain evenly moist soil for proper establishment in the landscape.

How To Fertilize

Fertilize your Stella de Oro Daylily in spring as it begins to break dormancy for the year.

How To Prune

During the growing season, you can maximize rebloom by removing spent flowers promptly, before they have a chance to go to seed and divert energy to seed production. Cut down brown foliage in late fall or winter to make way for new growth to emerge in early spring. If reblooming slows down, dig, divide, and replant clumps to restore vigor.
