Why plant Variegated Boxwood?

Classic foliage and elegant growth habit - the Variegated Boxwood is a compact and slow growing shrub that offers stunning foliage color all year long. This evergreen shrub provides bright green foliage lined with white margins that mature to a creamy yellow hue. As a slow growing and easy to grow plant, the Variegated Boxwood makes a stunning addition when included in elegant English styled gardens or manicured landscapes. An added bonus? Tiny yellow blooms appear late spring - insignificant to our eyes but wonderful for the local honey bees!

How to use Variegated Boxwood in the landscape?

The Variegated Boxwood offers amazing tolerance to urban pollution, as well as soil adaptability, granting many potential locations for planting. Often used as a low growing hedge or border planting and capable of growing in a container, the possibilities are endless when considering where you would like to display this lush little guy.

How To Plant Variegated Boxwood

Have you been considering growing your own Variegated Boxwood? Please do! These charming little fellas are capable of growing in lighting that spans from full sun to partial shade and even fully shaded areas (however, locations offering less sunlight will provide lighter foliage color compared to those in full sun). The Variegated Boxwood is tolerant of most soils but does best in nutrient rich, well draining locations. See our planting guide located in the blog section for a more in-depth look at the process of planting.

How To Water

When first planted, we recommend giving your Variegated Boxwood a deep and thorough watering. For ongoing care in the first year, we suggest watering at a minimum of twice a week, making sure to quench your shrub's thirst. We recommend keeping an eye on your local weather and watering accordingly during periods of high heat or drought to ensure the happiness of your shrub.

How To Fertilize

When it comes time to feed your Variegated Boxwood, no need to worry it's as easy as can be! When first planting, we recommend adding fertilizer to the planting site. If you planted during the spring, re-apply fertilizer in late fall, before dormancy. If you planted in fall, wait until spring before the push of new growth to fertilize again. Remember these steps for the life of the plant and you will continue to have lavish foliage each year.

How To Prune

Due to the slow growth rate and compact habit, pruning your Variegated Boxwood may not always be necessary. If you would like to give it a quick trim, it would be best done in early spring, after the last frost of the season, so as to not hinder the health of your shrub. A light pruning may be done to remove any dead or damaged branches, as well as to maintain the shape you desire.
