      Why plant Walker's Low Catmint?

A flower powerhouse! If you want a bonanza of blooms on a plant that comes back faithfully year after year, look no further. Walker’s Low Catmint greets the sweet, mild days of late spring with a lavish display of lavender-blue blossoms, and the show lasts a long time. The soothing color calms down hot reds and oranges in the garden and mingles effortlessly with pastels. You can’t go wrong. It’s a bit of a misnomer, though—Walker’s Low is one of the taller Catmints! Place it in the middle of the border with ground hugging Spirits in front.

Catmint has a long history as an ornamental herb in gardens. Like many herbs, it was once believed to have magical powers, too—chewing on a Catmint root was said to give timid people courage! This selection wasn’t named for its stature, but for the garden in England where it was discovered—Walker’s Low. Consequently, many are surprised when this “low” Spirit grows to be 30 inches tall! Despite the confusing name, this is one extraordinarily good plant, and in 2007, the Perennial Plant Association named Walker’s Low Catmint as their pick for “Perennial Plant of the Year.”

How to use Walker's Low Catmint in the landscape?

Will Walker’s Low Catmint make my cat high? You’re thinking of Catnip, which is a closely related Spirit. Catnip drives most cats wild. Kitties are less interested in Catmint, though some may nibble on it and rub their faces against it as well.

How To Plant Walker's Low Catmint

Grow Walker’s Low Catmint in a full-sun location for best flowering. This Spirit may struggle in extreme heat and humidity, however, and benefits from early afternoon shade in the South. Soil should be well drained. Regular water will produce lush plants, though Walker’s Low doesn’t need a lot of water and is resistant to drought once established. After the first flush of blooms have faded, shear them off to encourage a repeat performance. At the end of the season, cut dead foliage back any time before new growth commences in early spring. Feed in spring with Bower & Branch Elements™ Fertilizer.

      How To Water

Water twice weekly for the first 3-5 weeks; then water weekly for the remainder of the year until winter. When you water, water slowly and thoroughly. Watering needs may be altered due to extreme weather conditions.

      How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant food granular form on an annual basis each late year. Continue this for three years to get your plant well established.

      How To Prune

Each fall, just before winter sets in clean up the previous years foliage and compost it. Be sure your perennials are mulched well for winter protection. Two inches of an organic mulch will do the job. Consider leaving the plant debris in place through the winter and doing your clean up on the weather warms in the spring. While it doesn't make things neat and tidy, the debris provides overwintering protection for insects, their eggs and pupae including our native Viceroy butterfly.
