Why plant Skyline® Honeylocust?
Are you looking for a shade tree that offers stunning visuals as well as incredible adaptability? Then the Skyline® Honeylocust is the perfect match. This tree not only offers a nice light shade, allowing lawns and other plants to survive in the understory, but this particular cultivar is also thornless! Growing to heights 60-80’ tall and a width spanning 30-40’, this moderately fast growing tree provides around 24” of growth a year. These trees offer feathery, fern-like foliage, sporting a lovely green hue that, come fall, turns vibrant yellow before dormancy. These trees do produce blooms that are inconspicuous and light green in color followed by purplish-brown seed pods lasting into winter. If you are curious, its because of these seed pods that the Honeylocust obtained its name. There is a sweet gummy substance that can be found inside these pods.
How to use Skyline® Honeylocust in the landscape?
Thornless you say, sign me up! That's right, this particular cultivar (unlike others!) has no thorns while also producing less fruit/seeds - meaning less mess. The Skyline® Honeylocust provides not only adaptability but is capable of surviving urban pollution granting this tree a plethora of planting locations. These trees are also handy at aiding in controlling erosion when planted in areas containing poor soil. This tree drops its foliage earlier in fall which aids in preventing damage from early freezes as well as heavy snow. Utilize the Skyline® Honeylocust as a shade tree or planted as a specimen. How To Plant Skyline® Honeylocust
The Skyline® Honeylocust is prized for its adaptability to thrive in many locations, even urban ones, allowing this tree to be planted in local parks or utilized as a street tree. Planted in a location that receives full sun will do this tree wonders. Previously mentioning its adaptability, the Skyline® Honeylocust does best in well draining soils while tolerating areas that offer dry or compacted soil types. This tree may also be utilized to stabilize sites with poor soil and help control erosion.
How To Water
You have just finished planting your Skyline® Honeylocust, now it's time to consider your watering schedule. Until your tree is established, we recommend watering at a minimum of twice a week to ensure the health and growth of the tree. Here at Bower & Branch we offer our Elements Watering System to aid you in the process. Once the tree is established watering when necessary or during hot more dry periods will suffice.
How To Fertilize
Here at Bower & Branch, we offer our Elements® Starter Plant Food to meet all your fertilizer needs. When first planting, we advise adding a portion of the fertilizer into the planting sight mixing with the compost planting mix. Once the tree is in the ground, dressing the site with some fertilizer and watering deeply will have your tree fed in no time. Our rule when it comes to fertilizing is to do so in early spring or in fall depending on when the tree was planted. If you planted your tree in the fall, then spring will be the next time to fertilize and vice versa.
How To Prune
Maintenance and pruning care for the Skyline® Honeylocust is fairly simple. Prune in late winter or early spring, simply remove any dead or broken branches while also keeping an eye out and removing any competing branches. We also advise for the health of the tree, to remove or thin out areas that appear to be more congested to allow proper air circulation. If planted in a location where lawn care would take place you may remove lower branches starting at a young age if you so choose. Achieve this by pruning a few branches each year until satisfied with the clearance available.

Your trees and plants are grown across the United States at various Bower & Branch Growers. Depending on your location, your plant orders may be shipped from various locations. How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
