Why plant Sun Valley Red Maple?
When the air turns brisk and frost begins to coat the lawn white each morning, that's when Sun Valley Red Maple is at its hottest, turning vivid red and glowing like molten lava. This fast-growing shade tree will soon stand tall and proud along your street or driveway, showcased on the front lawn, or supporting the kids' swing in the backyard. Plant one on the south side of your house and it will cool your home in summer while letting the sun stream in during winter. A tough and adaptable native Maple tree, Sun Valley is easy to grow and maintain. It's a male selection, too, so no messy "helicopters" or stray seedlings!
Dr. Alden “Denny” Townsend is who we have to thank for this fine selection. Dr. Townsend worked for the USDA for many years (he’s now retired), breeding new varieties of trees, which were then introduced to the public through the National Arboretum. He is best known for his work in developing Elms that have a natural resistance to the dreaded Dutch Elm Disease, but he also worked with other species, like Red Maple. To get Sun Valley, he pollinated a Red Sunset® Maple (a female) with ‘Autumn Flame’ (a male).
How to use Sun Valley Red Maple in the landscape?
You can have your own Sun Valley in your backyard! This fast growing tree has a rounded crown with brilliant green summer foliage. Come fall, foliage transforms into brilliant shades of orange and red. A great lawn or street tree that is easy to grow and very adaptable!

How To Plant Sun Valley Red Maple
Red Maples are one of those trees that you plant and don’t worry about afterwards. In other words – it’s easy to grow! These fast-growing Maples like soaking up, sunshine so be sure to plant it in sunny location. Red Maples also do fairly well in most soil conditions as long as the soil has good drainage. Once established, your tree will be more tolerant of wet soil conditions. Red Maples don’t have any major pest or disease problems, which is wonderful. One slight inconvenience you might encounter is their surface roots. These surface roots make it difficult for anything to grow underneath them – grass or plants (a great spot for a sitting area if you ask me). If you can overcome this minor detail, you got yourself a beautiful shade tree with gorgeous red fall color!
How To Water
The Sun Valley Red Maple offers moderate drought resistance after it has become established, but before that, it will need some assistance in the water department! After you plant, water your tree deeply and then water twice a week for the first few months.
How To Fertilize
Fertilize your Sun Valley Red Maple in early spring, as it breaks dormancy and then again in fall, as it enters dormancy. This will ensure that your tree is receiving all it needs throughout the year!
How To Prune
Red Maples don’t need a lot of attention when it comes to pruning. Prune if you'd like to clean up your plant in its younger years, but other than that, its not recommended.

Please expect orders with multiple items to be delivered over a number of days as a result. Orders made up of numerous items or selections will not arrive at your home on the same day.
Shipping Delays:
From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.
How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
