This exotic tree, with all its honey coconut sweetness, will be an oasis in your garden in a canopy of long-reaching green leaves, hiding clusters of delicious fruits, some weighing to be almost a pound! Begin new family traditions of harvesting pawpaws in the fall for nutritious smoothies, snacks, or even ice cream!

One of the most popular varieties, Prolific Pawpaw was developed by Corwin Davis in Bellevue, Michigan in the 1980’s. The earliest accounts of Pawpaw Trees in North America date back to 1541. A Spanish traveler named Hernando De Soto was given pawpaw fruits from the Native Americans who were harvesting the trees by the Mississippi River. Pawpaw fruit was a main source of food for Native Americans and Settlers as they lived and traveled through the land; they mainly relied on foraging for food. They were especially beloved amongst Native Americans, most tribes having a month dedicated to the fruits in their calendar, referring to them as 'asimi'. During the Great Depression, they were nicknamed "poor man's banana". After World War II and the introduction of other fruits, pawpaw became harder to find. Mainly seen today in farmer's markets, you can now keep the tradition going and harvest these delicious treats in your own backyard!

How To Plant Prolific Pawpaw Treeling

Pawpaw’s home in the wild is at forest edges or in the woodland understory, and it appreciates similar conditions in the landscape. It is happiest in a site with rich, organic-laden, well-drained soil and a generous layer of mulch. It flourishes in the shade but will tolerate full sun if it is shaded for the first few years and if regular irrigation can be provided. This tree doesn’t like constantly soggy soil, but it doesn’t like to dry out, either.

How To Water

Pawpaws will appreciate regular water during its first few years in the ground and irrigation during long dry spells after it’s established.

How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant Food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.

How To Prune

Suckers may appear around the tree—this is simply Pawpaw’s natural growth habit. You may pull or mow off the suckers to maintain the tree as a single-trunked specimen, or you may let them grow to allow a Pawpaw patch of your own to form.
