Why plant Gulf Stream Heavenly Bamboo?

Hardy and full of surprises, you'll never know what is next up the sleeve of Gulf Stream Heavenly Bamboo. Not a true member of the bamboo family, Gulf Stream's foliage takes on the appearance of bamboo which is where this shrub gets it's name from. The foliage is always changing - from the scarlet of new growth, to the blue-green of mature foliage, and finishing off with the brightest, most vibrant red in the fall. Gulf Stream, with it's compact shape, is a great addition to use for borders or foundation plantings that will really make a statement in the overall landscape.

Heavenly Bamboo is native to Japan, China, and India and is referred to as bamboo due to the cane-like stems and leaves similar to that of bamboo leaves. Gulf Stream was developed at Hines Nursery in Richmond, Texas.

How to use Gulf Stream Heavenly Bamboo in the landscape?

Gulf Stream, like other Heavenly Bamboo varieties, are non-invasive as these plants do not seed and spread over the landscape. This evergreen nandina has bright red foliage in the spring and also provides fantastic fall color in orange and red tones. How To Plant Gulf Stream Heavenly Bamboo

Gulf Stream grows best in full sun but can tolerate full shade if that is where this shrub is planted. This shrub prefers soil that is moist, rich, humusy with consistent watering. Once Gulf Stream is established, this plant can be drought tolerant and is evergreen in warmer climates. Gulf Stream rarely flowers or fruits.

    How To Water

Water twice weekly for the first 3-5 weeks; then water weekly for the remainder of the year until winter. When you water, water slowly and thoroughly. Watering needs may be altered due to extreme weather conditions.

    How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant food granular form on an annual basis each late year. Continue this for three years to get your plant well established.

    How To Prune

With its compact habit, pruning is not going to be much of a concern. When needed, prune in early spring before it begins to grow.
