Why plant Hillside Creeper Scotch Pine?

The Hillside Creeper Scotch Pine although not native to the Americas is a cultivar that was selected by Layne Ziegenfuss from Hillside Nursery in 1970 and was grown from seed. This low growing shrub displays light green twisted needles which add color and interest all year long due to its evergreen qualities. Come fall those light green needles take on a lighter hue sporting a more yellowish green color lasting through the winter months. Another beautiful aspect of the Hillside Creeper is the bark, attractive reddish brown to orange in color; this feature easily adds depth to any garden it's found in. The Hillside Creeper Scotch Pine in its youth provides quick growth, as this shrub matures the growth tends to slow down. This shrub grows to about 2’ tall yet spans a width of almost 8’ making this shrub a perfect fit for barren landscapes. The Hillside Creeper Scotch Pine is also useful for erosion control in rocky locations or sunny slopes.

How to use Hillside Creeper Scotch Pine in the landscape?

The Hillside Creeper Scotch Pine is a lovely conifer that maintains a low forming growing habit. These shrubs do wonderfully planted in rock gardens as an accent, utilized as a specimen on its own, or planted as a border in a shrub garden. The Hillside Creeper offers speedy growth in its youth that will fill empty spaces with ease. As this shrub matures the growth rate will slow but you will have a considerable sized shrub before that time comes. The Hillside Creeper Scotch Pine also adds interest during late fall and into the winter season with the change of color in the foliage.
