Why plant Brandywine Red Maple?
The Brandywine Red Maple is the perfect medium-sized shade tree—big enough to give you a nice shady space for picnicking or lounging under on a hot summer day, but not so huge that it will cast your whole yard in darkness. This moderately fast-growing tree will bring a polished look to your landscape with its neat, oval canopy and dense, glossy foliage. In fall, it will wow you when the leaves turn a glorious burgundy-red color. Brandywine is not only a handsome tree but an adaptable one, and is at home on city streets, in the country, and everywhere in between.
Red Maple is a familiar and colorful part of the native landscape throughout much of the eastern U.S. Brandywine, a special selection of Red Maple, was developed by Dr. Alden “Denny” Townsend of the USDA. Dr. Townsend is best known for his work in discovering American Elms resistant to the dreaded Dutch Elm disease, but he introduced some other fine trees as well. He produced this Maple by crossing the brilliant October Glory Red Maple with Autumn Flame Maple, hoping to get a tree with foliage that was radiant in fall and also resistant to leafhoppers, a pesky insect that causes stippling off the leaves. It was a rousing success!
How to use Brandywine Red Maple in the landscape?
Red Maple Trees usually have only male or female flowers. Brandywine Red Maple is a male, which is a good thing if weedy seedlings would be a hassle in your planting bed. No messy “helicopter” seeds or seedlings popping up with this dude.
Planting Zones
Hardiness Zones: 4-9
How To Plant Brandywine Red Maple
Plant Brandywine Red Maple in a sunny spot in just about any type of soil (even clay). Though it prefers good drainage and average amounts of water, it will also grow in that low spot in your yard that stays a little soggy after a rain. When it is young, Brandywine has smooth, thin bark that is susceptible to injury, so one thing you will want to be careful about is to not damage it with string trimmers or other equipment.
How To Water
Maples will appreciate regular water during its first few years in the ground and irrigation during long dry spells after it’s established.
How To Fertilize
Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant Food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.
How To Prune
This tree is generally trouble-free, needing little pruning and rarely having any serious problems with disease or insect pests.

Shipping Delays:
From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.
How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
