Why the Arapaho Blackberry?

Arapaho Blackberry is an early ripening thornless shrub that will self support itself even without a trellis. Delicious berries ripen in mid-June, just in time for summer picnics and warm mornings, making your grandmothers' jam recipe. An eager grower and hardy fruit, Arapaho Blackberries will flourish in your garden this spring and give you a belly full of berries!

Arapaho Blackberry is a 1993 product of the University of Arkansas. This blackberry is considered the earliest berry producer, producing small berries throughout the first summer. Arapaho is also hand-friendly due to this blackberry being thornless.

How to use in the landscape?

Bring your largest berry basket and be ready to pick fresh blackberries! Arapaho Blackberry is a high-yielding thornless blackberry variety that produces berries before the heat of summer hits. Berries are very easy to harvest and are self-pollinating. Arapaho is known for being disease-resistant and having dainty, white flowers before sprouting berries.

How To Plant

Like all other blackberries, Arapaho enjoys being in the direct sun for at least 4 hours a day, if not more. Full sun is best; however, Arapaho can be exposed to part shade and not be detrimentally impacted. Blackberries enjoy being planted in acidic soil, rich in organic matter, moist, and well-draining. Be sure not to plant blackberries in wet, soggy soil; these berries do not enjoy having wet feet. If the landscape has clay soil, planting raspberries in raised beds would be a great option to enjoy growing your fruit. After fruiting, prune all canes that produced fruit. Thoroughly prune late winter to early spring to remove any damage occurring during dormancy. Blackberries are self-fertile, so you do not need to plant another blackberry bush.

How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.
