Why plant Parkland Pillar Birch?
An exemplary exclamation point for northern landscapes! Parkland Pillar Birch is a svelte, columnar tree with flashy white bark and a penchant for cold winters. Hardy to 40 below zero, it survives in the most frigid regions. This is a fast-growing tree, quickly reaching lofty heights, but remaining super-skinny throughout its life. Parkland Pillar gives you the look of a Lombardy Poplar, but it is more refined and longer-lived. Use it as a striking specimen, plant a pair to frame a distant view, or employ a whole row of trees as a windbreak or property line divider. Exquisite!
Parkland Pillar is not only tolerant of extreme cold, but it is also more resistant to heat, drought, and wind than other Birch Trees. It was derived from Dakota Pinnacle Birch, a selection bred at North Dakota State University in the 1980s as part of a program to develop more durable Birches. Dakota Pinnacle has a handsome elliptical outline and makes a fine landscape tree. Parkland Pillar was discovered as a random mutation on one branch of a Dakota Pinnacle Tree growing in a nursery in Alberta, Canada. It maintains a narrower outline than the original without any pruning. In fall, Parkland Pillar Birch’s deep green leaves are transformed. They turn a warm golden-yellow, and the canopy glows like a candle flame in the cool autumn air. The leaves hold quite late, extending the show.
How to use Parkland Pillar Birch in the landscape?
This upright, narrow tree creates an attractive privacy screen or hedge when planted in a row. Planted singly, it will stand out in your landscape. Use to line your driveway or your property line.

How To Plant Parkland Pillar Birch
This Asian White Birch prefers full sun and well drained soil. Awesome fall color. Parkland Pillar Birch is easy to grow and you can plant them in practically any sunny location, just make sure the soil is not extremely dry. Parkland will brighten your cool, autumn days.
How To Water
Water twice weekly for the first 3-5 weeks; then water weekly for the remainder of the year until winter. When you water, water slowly and thoroughly. Watering needs may be altered due to extreme weather conditions.
How To Fertilize
Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant Food granular form on an annual basis each fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established as it gives your tree the nutrients it needs to produce lush new growth for the following spring.
How To Prune
Not much pruning work required due to its tight growth habit. Prune as needed in early summer.
Frequently Asked Questions
THANK YOU for asking - we are always so encouraged when our customers are hands on with their trees!
For this spring, there is no need for the water systems - going forward, use these only during high heat periods or periods of drought. Watch for the later this spring and summer, but for spring, the weather is almost always a 'friend' to new trees.
What we do recommend is Spring Fertilizing - watch closely for 'bud swell' - that is, when leaf buds first become swollen and are moving towards leaf formation. In your area, this will most likely occur around the middle of April.
We strongly encourage using the Organic Plant Magic brand of Care Elements available on our site. Use granular for your trees for this early application - it won't burn in any way so there is no risk. The real benefit comes from bringing your soil to life, which is where the real power is. After your leaves fully form, you can also apply the liquid formulation, this method is a favorite of our tree growers!
So for now - all is good, watch for bud swell, apply spring fertilizer (only soil health really matters) and only water when the conditions dictate. The goal for this spring is to confirm winter survival and support new root growth!

Shipping Delays:
From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.
How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
