Why plant Ann Magnolia?
A flowering dynamo you can depend on, year after year! Spring-blooming Magnolias can be a bit of a gamble in areas where late frosts are common, but Ann Magnolia blooms a little later than most, and it usually escapes damage. When the earliest Magnolias are finishing up their performance, that’s when Ann steps into the limelight, unfurling its lightly fragrant, rosy-pink flowers in great abundance. The four-to-five inch blooms appear on bare branches and make quite a show! Ann stays smaller than most Magnolias and is easier to incorporate into modest-sized properties. You’ll love it!
In the 1950s, plant hybridizers William Kosar and Francis de Vos at the National Arboretum in Washington, D.C., started a Magnolia breeding program. One of their projects involved crossing two Asian species, the early-blooming Star Magnolia and the later-blooming Lily Magnolia. Eight fine new selections arose from the program. The “Little Girls,” as the collection came to be called, included Susan, Randi, Ricki, Pinkie, Judy, Jane, and Ann. Over the years, Ann has emerged as one of the most popular selections (along with Jane). Its compact habit, profuse flowering, and delayed bloom time have earned it pride of place in many, many landscapes.
How to use Ann Magnolia in the landscape?
Most Magnolias are not an option for those who live where winters are harsh, but Ann is not like most Magnolias. This tough trouper is cold-hardy to at least 30 below zero. Northern gardeners rejoice! Plant this dainty little lady near your patio where you can enjoy the blooms or as a single specimen tree for all to enjoy!

How To Plant Ann Magnolia
Give your Ann Magnolia a sunny spot in a well-drained site, and it will be happy! A rich, organic, slightly acidic soil will result in the best growth. Like most Magnolia Trees, Ann dislikes both very wet and very dry conditions, so plant it a couple of inches above grade to improve drainage, and supply it with regular water, especially during the first year or two of establishment. A generous layer of mulch will help in regulating soil moisture levels as well as evening out root zone temperatures.
How To Water
After you Ann has been planted, be sure to water your new tree in well! From there, consistent watering is key to getting your tree to establish a healthy root system. After establishment, your tree should can handle mild droughts, but be sure to water if that is the case!
How To Fertilize
During fall, feed your Magnolia Bower & Branch Elements Starter Plant Food - this will give your tree all the nutrients it needs.
How To Prune
While your Ann won't need much in the way of pruning, Magnolias should be pruned so that dead branches and twigs that may be diseased can be removed. Prune after all the flowers are spent.

How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
