Why plant Burgundy Hearts® Redbud?
You’ll admire your Burgundy Hearts® Eastern Redbud tree when its delicate lavender-pink blossoms line the branches in spring, but you’ll fall in love when its perfectly heart-shaped, deep crimson leaves unfold like so many Valentine’s Day cards a bit later. In summer, this small ornamental tree will continue to delight as the older leaves turn deep green while new burgundy foliage keeps expanding, creating an interesting bi-color effect. Burgundy Hearts® Redbud or Forest Pansy? That is the question. These two similar purple-leaved trees are often compared to each other, but there are distinctions. The biggest difference is that while Burgundy Heart’s leaves turn green as they age, new red foliage continues to emerge throughout the season, making for a quirky two-tone look that isn’t apparent in Forest Pansy.
Redbuds are red-hot! This classic American tree has been reinvented into all sorts of intriguing colors and forms in recent years, and people can’t get enough of them. Burgundy Hearts® is a fine new addition to the collection that is especially valued for durable foliage that doesn’t scorch in hot sun like that of the former red-leaved standard, ‘Forest Pansy.’ Burgundy Hearts® Redbud was discovered at Greenleaf Nursery in Oklahoma in 2000. It’s not a hybrid tree—just a lucky random variation that happened to occur in one plant among a crop of 3,000 normal green seedlings that spring.
How to use Burgundy Hearts® Redbud in the landscape?
Plant Burgundy Hearts® in your entryway garden to sweetly greet your guests at the front door or around back where its arching canopy may shade a romantic seating area for two. Pollinators will fall for this native flowering tree, too!

How To Plant Burgundy Hearts® Redbud
To bring out the most vibrant color in this tree’s namesake foliage, give it a site in full sun. Use an organic mulch around the tree for the care bed as it will help maintain moisture, regulate the soil temperature and minimize any possible root competition from weeks or grass.
How To Water
Immediately after planting, water your tree thoroughly, deeply, and slowly. Avoid watering quickly as the water will then run off quickly, not reaching the roots. Water every two to three days for the first few weeks after planting and then slow to five to six days.
As it becomes established, the Burgundy Hearts® will have some degree of drought tolerance once established, but the leaves will stay healthier-looking if your tree is irrigated during dry spells and not made to fend for itself. It will not abide “wet feet,” however, so be sure that the soil is well draining.
Keep in mind that environmental factors - temperature, rainfall, and soil conditions - will alter watering needs. If you have specific questions regarding the watering of your Burgundy Hearts®, contact our Plant Whisperers for guided watering assistance.
How To Fertilize
As you plant your Burgundy Hearts® Redbud, be sure to apply the Bower & Branch Elements Starter Plant Food, both in the hole and around to root zone. This will deliver the proper nutrients to your tree as it begins to establish itself in your landscape. Continue to apply fertilizer for the next three years in spring and fall to be sure your tree has everything it needs to get a great head start!
How To Prune
The growth of the Burgundy Hearts® Redbud is moderate, so about 1-2' of growth a year. As a result, pruning is seldom necessary, though this tree responds well to pruning should you choose to shape it or give it a little nip and tuck. The best time to do so is when the tree is dormant in late winter to early spring.

Shipping Delays:
From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.
How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
