Why plant Kwanzan Japanese Flowering Cherry?
With a Kwanzan Cherry tree, you can have your own personal Cherry Blossom Festival! At the height of spring, this small to medium-sized ornamental tree is thickly set with scores of ruffled, frosted pink flowers. You’ll be snapping pictures like a tourist in your own backyard! And though those frilly Japanese Cherry blossoms receive all the glory, Kwanzan Cherry will also grace your landscape with lovely peach-colored foliage in fall. Plant this vase-shaped beauty as a single specimen underplanted with tulips, or place one on either side of a path in your garden and have the pleasure of walking under a Cherry blossom tree arch each spring.
Thanks to a very generous gift from the People of Japan in 1912, approximately 3,750 Cherry trees are planted along the Tidal Basin in Washington DC. In a ceremony on March 27, 1912 the first lady Helen Taft and the wife of the Japanese ambassador Viscountess Chinda, planted the first two trees together on the northern bank in West Potomac Park. These two original trees are still standing today marked by a large plaque. Each spring our nation’s capital celebrates the National Cherry Blossom Festival. This has become a cherished tradition for many, drawing 1.5 million people to the city each year. In 2012, The United States sent 3000 flowering dogwood trees to Japan to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Japan’s Cherry trees. The trees are a living reminder of the goodwill and friendship between the two countries.
How to use Kwanzan Japanese Flowering Cherry in the landscape?
Passersby will do a double take with this gorgeous flowering Cherry in your yard! This superb specimen's branches are covered with clusters of large double-pink flowers in spring. And although you can't see them under the blanket of pink ruffles - this tree has leaves too! Beautiful bronzy-green foliage covers the tree when those fluffy pink flowers fade.

How To Plant Kwanzan Japanese Flowering Cherry
These Flowering Cherries like being planted in sunny locations and can grow in most soil conditions. Once you have your Cherry planted, make sure the soil is moist, without being constantly wet. There are those “lucky” trees that Japanese Beetles like to munch on and Flowering Cherries are one of them. There are a few ways to prevent or control beetle damage to your trees. Insecticide concentrates and sprays are available that can either be watered in around the base of the infected tree or sprayed on the foliage or beetles.
How To Water
Water twice weekly for the first 3-5 weeks; then water weekly for the remainder of the year until winter. When you water, water very slowly and very thoroughly. The water needs to reach to the bottom of the root ball and that takes time. Watering needs may be altered due to extreme weather conditions.
How To Fertilize
Incorporate Elements Starter Plant food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant food granular form on an annual basis each fall. If planting in the fall, use Elements fertilizer while planting and start your regular annual fertilizing the following fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established as it gives your tree the nutrients it needs to produce lush new growth for the following spring.
How To Prune
Prune your Kwanzan Cherry in late spring after flowering or very early summer. Remove any broken or crossing branches or suckers at the base of the tree.

Shipping Delays:
From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.
How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
